My boy also attended mainstream kindy in a full day childcare centre, but we will take him out to special classes (speech therapy etc) in the afternoon almost 3 times a week. We are lucky that he has a group of 3-4 kids who took him in their group, play with him and 'protect' him. I think as long as the school is aware of your kid's condition and they are well prepared ( in term of make sure additional supports such as assistant teachers is available), she will be fine in mainstream.
Actually, I'm glad that we make the decision to let him go mainstream though it wasn't easy for him and people around him. At the end of the day, we only hope for him to grow up as an independent individual and integrate into the society. Of course, special schools or other specialized classes can teach him the social skill. I also know that many mainstream schools also have special program to allow their students to 'visit' and spend some time the kids in special schools so that they will learn to empathize and accept the special kids. However, I think these orchestrated program will never beat having the NT and special kids in the same learning environment.
After these years, I learn to think of autism, not as a disease or disorder but just a variation of human being, not \"disabled\" but \"differently abled\" so no point trying to find the \"cure\" when it doesn't exist. Though, reports show that 1 in every 100 kids are autistic, we are still minority, so have to find way to cope and lived with the majority of neuro typical lor
thanks for sharing your experience too. it further confirms my belief in this area. but now taking one step at a time, and slowly I will get there.
totally agree with you on your perspective on autism. I tend to think that they are wired differently. there are also times when I like to think that maybe they are simply the evolved form of human race, for some reason that is currently unknown to us, and because they are the minority, they are being viewed as 'abnormal'. I am certain the first homeo sapien that evolved from the ape must have freaked out a lot of beings then.
what we perceive as normal or abnormal is very much based on our experience within the majority. Who knows, 'we' who see 'ourselves' as normal may one day be overtaken by the now 'abnormal' who would one day establish a new normal.

I often question the doctors and my SLT on why there are so many HF ASD kids around. Our generation or our parents generation, why dun have such people. And when these HF ASD kids from our time grow up, what have become of them.
My SLT very funny, she say there are plenty of HF ASD adults amongst us. Some diagnose, some not diagnose. She mentioned those weird weird anti social colleagues we have could be HF ASD.
I do have such colleagues last time, does very well in their scope of work. But when it comes to team work or team lunch or socializing, he is really odd ball. And the jokes he tries to crack, no one find it funny
That aside, I am so glad most of your kids are doing well in P1. I will keep my faith as well. -

i think your SLT is quite spot on the fact of HF ASD.
I asked my daughter pyschologist before this question too. she also mentioned that there are quite a few HF ASD , some might even be your colleagues. but just that they are grow up and are able to adjust .
she also mention that last time maybe we are not so advanced , so even if kids last time have some problems , the teachers might just label them as being naughty or mischevious without seeking or diagnosing it.
My sis was also commenting that everyone might have some autism traits in us. then she was saying " if i donโt do this routine of going through my note book every day, i will feel uneasy the whole day, i might be abit autistic in that sense. " i think its quite true in some extent too. -

Lol. Agree. I think Iโm probably like that too. If I donโt wear my watch when I go out, I will feel very uncomfortable. I also need my lip balm all the time. I am a ๅฎ ๅฅณ. Donโt like to go out type. -

May I know roughly at what age then they will communicate w you like sharing of school friends or when u prompt question to them they are able to answer?
My son is now 2.5 yo . He only know how to ask things from me. Or ask me where is his toys n what he want to eat or drink or to have.
He love singings , imitate us or peers alot. Recently he use two stick n imagine as chop stick and say ma ma w a small bowl.
He just duno how to share w me how his school when I ask him.
So I wish you k share w me at which age then they are able to communicate ? -

My sch-suspect-ADHd-but-we-don't-think-so-but-agree-have-speech-delay boy only managed to get most of his classmates names correct n share sstuff with me after 4yo. Cos he is yr end kid, it is like around k1. Even now at times, he can't remember what teacher teach in class but will tell me who is naughty in classHi all experience mummies .

I cant answer you that. Cos till now my son still doesn't communicate with me about his day in school.
He only communicate or ask me if he needs or wants something. My son is already in K1 this year.
My another kid is also 2 years old. He also doesn't share with me his day in school. I think they are not developed to that stage yet. -

Have you started your boy on speech therapy? If started, can share what is being taught in the speech therapy? My maid told me in my son's speech sessions is very quiet. I dunno wat is going on inside. -

There is a movie called \"Temple Grandin\" which is a must watch for all parents, especial for kids with Autism. It is a movie about Temple Grandin herself, a child diagnosed of autistic since she was young which was almost unheard of in the 60s, how her mother sees her as \"different, not less\", how she overcame herself to become a leading educator in the line of autism we know today. Unlike normal people, she thinks in 'pictures', has photographic memory and learns things in a flash and also hates being around people most because they could be mean and cruel.
