All About Autism

Yes, the public should be educated in autism, that's why I highly encourage more people to watch Temple Grandin. It was how I learned about Autism - movies..
Here's one of the most touching part:

People can be amazing in the way they think. It used to be that everyone forced their kids to use their right hand to write instead of the left. Then people start noticing that some of the most outstanding people are left-handers, and parents are less particular about switching their kids into right-handers - some even hoped their kids could have been left-handed.
Now, it is known that many outstanding people, are actually somewhat autistic, and that is sort of like a good thing as it strikes a balance to the lop-sided perception that autism is all bad. I wonder if there will come a time when people will also start hoping that their kids are autistic. -

that's a good one.

Like what temple grandin said, if there wasn’t any autistic pp, we will still be living in caves because we are too preoccupied with socializing.

nugget:
That's why early intervention is very important. The idea is to train them and teach them to overcome their difficulties and challenges. Whilst we acknowledge that the kids have their limitations and challenges, we must also try to normalize their lives.
Ya. Hope our kids will grow up to be like our weird weird colleagues. At least they are more independent and can support their family.ImMeeMee:
i agree, this is also one of my main worries. while the education for special needs children seem to be leveling up, the same does not appear to be the case for jobs for ASD adults.
Amidst all the therapies and interventions, must also expose them to \"normal\" activities that other NT kids their age go through as well.
Expose the kids to different types of activities - not at the same time, of course. For example, ballet, music, swimming, art, running, etc. We may not expect them to excel in everything and it's ok if they don't. But eventually, you will realize that the child will like one activity more than the other. And that's the one to concentrate on. Be it as a hobby, a distraction from daily grind or even as a career choice. -
nugget:
As it is a spectrum, it can be a case where some of these ASD individuals are less high functioning.Hi concern2,
Yes, I came across her name numerous times. She is \"hope\" that we have for our kids to grow up successful like her. But sometimes I wonder how many of the ASD kids will be like her.
Sigh, in Singapore is very hard to get acceptance. Did you notice the news lately? When they say ASD adults can work, all of them are usually in service in working as waiters or bakers. How my son can survive on that salary next time. Sigh sigh sigh... Endless worry!
Another possible reason is that, it cd be a high functioning individual, but lacks the necessary social skills.
For parents of kids with asd kids in mainstream schools - don't neglect the social skills part when the child is in upper primary or secondary school. By then, it's unlikely the child may need OT, so can consider social skills then, esp if time and resource is a constraint. Helps them to understand what are behavioral norms. Because they are so logic minded, they have difficulty trying to accept and understand why we do / say certain things.
Trust me, these kids do want to belong and fit in with their peers. And for kids who care about relationships (i don't mean the bgr type - but getting along with others), they will make an effort to know what is the accepted norm.
Sometimes i think they are more normal than us in our abnormal world. -
Reading Temple Grandin and Catherine Maurice books helped me survive the early years.
Reading Maurice's sharing was an inspiration and motivation as she is a mother sharing her struggles and experience of how she managed her 2 asd kids.
Come to think of it, i think they were the only 2 asd books available in Kino more than a decade ago. Can still vividly recall this: tears streaming down my face, and me reading the books and quoting certain sections of the books or phrases to dh during a road trip to KL back then.
Fast forward 10 years later, all i can say is that my dd and us have come a
l-o-n-g way.
Never give up hope. :rahrah: -

yes, temple grandin and catherine maurice have been inspiring, and these were the first few books that i read to gain insights into the world of autism, both from the individual and caretaker perspectives.Reading Temple Grandin and Catherine Maurice books helped me survive the early years.

i have just completed this book 'A friend like Henry' by Nuala Gardner. This book is narrated by the mother of a ASD boy whose world was unlocked after he had a golden retriever. it speaks of the struggles of the parents in trying to reach out to the son and the book had a good ending.
A good read for me. Plus the fact that it was a pleasant encounter for me to chance upon this book while browsing at the bookshop. So a nice little experience here.

Hi schweppes,
Thanks for the insight. So your dd now is already in Secondary school? Coping well in school work and socially?
My son only shows interests in kids in his EIPIC centre. But in his mainstream CC, he really is in his own world. He only interact his needs to teachers. The kids in his CC already got used to his behavior and stop approaching him and never include him in their clique. I got to relay on my siblings kids to stimulate and socialize with him. -
I think the temple grandin movie is a HBO TV movie and it wasn't shown in local cinema right?
I wonder if we can get it from video shop or download for free??
Some interesting stuff to read to start off the day. Latest US findings show that 1:88 kids are diagnose with autism.. don't think we will be that far off... Who knows, at the rate we are going, our special kids will become new norms... hahaha

Yes, I read that US is actually going to revise the criteria of ASD. Cos there are more and more kids diagnose under ASD. So maybe after revising, all the HF ASD kids are considered normalI think the temple grandin movie is a HBO TV movie and it wasn't shown in local cinema right?
