Just wondering, will kids become 'violent' or like to 'spar' with other kids?

I want to let my boy try, but my hb is hesistant. He says that we are exposing him to violence (which we try our very best to avoid - esp TV shows & cartoons).

Anyone can give me something good to convince my hb?
oh dear, then he cannot watch news, read newspapers...all the killing and bombing in the world...

he also cannot go to the wet market...see the fishmonger chop the fish, scarly grow up learn how to chop ppl...

and he better don't go downstairs...see cats fighting, or birds killing worms, all these are violence LOL

the benefits of learning martial arts are numerous.

        1) strong and fit body

        2) strong and tough mind...u will learn perseverance....never give up...because giving up halfway during a fight could result in serious injury...u learn to push yourself all the way....either win or die ๐Ÿ™‚

        3) people who learn martial arts are, on the contrary, unlikely to be violent nor engage in fights, because they know that in any fight, anyone has a good chance of being the loser, and getting seriously injured....so they learn not to use violence easily.

        4) Violence is sometimes necessary in our horrible world....u would want your child to be able to defend himself if and when necessary....and when that happens, you would want him to be the winner, right?

Eh, in SG wet markets, they are no longer allowed to kill live animals in front of the public. There's a special 'killing room' to do that.

My hb did not grow up in a good environment, so it's understandable that he's very protective of our boy.
Plus, my nephews are always fighting after they were exposed to Ultraman.

Actually I want my boy to learn because they are trained to be disciplined. And afterall, he'll need to go NS, it's good to start some form of physical training from young.

Will rope in my brother to help convince my hb ๐Ÿ˜› Thanks for your help!

            that's not \"fighting\", that's \"playing\".

there's more harm than good in being over-protective...well, at least u already know this ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hm...theirs would be considered fighting more than playing as they are really out to get each other until 1 person is injured or cries to surrender.

normal....this is Nature's way of sorting out interpersonal relationships and establishing hierachy.

For children, they play-fight. For adults, we fight each other with words in the office or back-stab each other in the boardroom.

                What's new? LOL

Thanks for the info, I will keep that in mind. Hmm, I stay in the east and hence would prefer one eastside to reduce a amount of travelling. Petrol is so expensive thiese days. ๐Ÿ˜„

they have a branch in katong. give them a call. its great if your kid takes an interest. my son has been in JH Kim since he was 4.5 or 5. he will be getting his red belt this month and probably black by mid year. it has done wonders for his fitness and confidence levels.

Can care to share the TKD your child had with JH Kim? I'm trying to put both kid (Age 4 & 7) to learn TKD either in TKD schools or CC. I notice some CC don't accept small age like age 4.

Hi parents, I started learning taekwondo in p4 after I got goldstar for swimming and my mum decided that I should start another sport.

It is actually depending on the parents if they want the kid to learn the art for what purposes. Recreation? Self defense? Or Competition?

For me I got into one of the best club in Singapore which is ACME taekwondo.(Tampines CCs are under them) So the training is quite tough and painful for those in the special team(sparring and performing team).

But if you just want your kid to learn it for recreation and self defense I think any clubs or CC that provide taekwondo is good enough. The youngest kid I have seen in a class was around P1.(however they do not remember the moves for gradingโ€ฆ so maybe older?)

Regarding sparring, I can only say if you do not really want your kid to be expose to any injury, do not put him into this sport. Even though most sparring sessions are light and harmless, you will never know what the other kid is thinking and yes accidents do happen.

If you really want your kid to learn a martial art and do not want him injured, why not try another art that do not involves sparring?=D

                        Hi Hi Hmsg,

Akido? Someone tell me to also consider Karate. Wow like that TKD, Aikido & Karate which is good? Maybe go Shaolin Temple is the best choice. Does Singapore have Shaolin Temple?

lol... my intent is for them to learn defensive skills... less aggressive... shaolin is also defensive in nature!!! not sure if there is a \"branch\" here... :? :? :?

Hi, if you r interested to let your child learn defensive skills, there is also martial arts like wushu, training in northern & southern styles, which partly originated from shaolin kungfu.
I have been training in this wushu for many years, also been helping to coach young children. Kindly PM me if you need more details, or check out this thread http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10271 on wushu lessons. ๐Ÿ™‚
