People have tried to close foreigners out, but it usually ends in bankruptcy and other problems. North Korea and Cuba have done that, and it doesn't work. -

Sorry, please don’t attack me, I am just giving a little opinion…
I always hear from govt that if we don’t have foreign talent, our economy will suffer. But I always think to myself, why must we have foreign talent then our economy will not suffer? I am not taking abt the waiter or the construction worker or the cleaner etc, the jobs that sporean don’t wan to do.
I am referring to jobs like IT, Engineering, banking, accountancy, administrative etc, all the executive jobs which we ourself dying to do. But yet foreign talent are engage to do and according to govt, our country need them… Sounds abt illogical to me since we ourselves also wanna do… I know our asking pay is more than them. But it’s becoz our standard leaving here is high. It’s not like I work 2 yrs already I can go bac to build house, buy land etc.
I can’t since I am a sporean so naturally my expected pay is high. The things here are getting expensive. Flats, cars, food, education. So if I don’t expect a high pay how to survive.
Sorry for the grudges as recently my job is being replace by a Foreigner from thailand and i know i may be terminated anytime despite working free OT everyday. She told me she is applying PR now. Her pay is abt 1k lower than me but coz she is foreigner company no need to pay cpf for her.
And my best friend also got retrench by her bank last wk. 100+ of them and she told me her jobs will be covered by PR too, newly converted PR. Not those PR who has been here for decades. To me, PR who has been here for decades is already one of us, especially those from msians. Somehow i don’t really feel that they are outsiders.
Haiz… I dunno am I and my best frn the only unlucky people in Singapore or this is common and we just have to accept this fate. Somemore heard that out there alot of companies retrenching, so I can only wait to be terminated, and hopefully get some retrenchment benefits. Then be a stay home mum.
To me if these PR or foreigners are really good in a particular field, or technology and certain skill which our people don’t have,then by all means they are welcome coz we need those special skills. Or foreign company are here to set up companies and they need to bring in their own pp, to me, it’s also fine. It’s common to see jap companies employing their own Japan pp to be mgt staffs.
But if its a local company and they get foreigners to do the same thing as us, and it’s not as if they can do faster or more efficient than us. It’s still the same. Then why are they favored over us?? Anyway, govt is still granting work permit like no one business. If they don’t control, I really worry…

If there is to be any priority of one SC over another SC.. I would suggest the criteria being whether 1 of the parent served NS.
So, effectively, there is 2 groups of SC Kids.
A) (examples)
1. MIS SC Father, served NS.
2. New citizen SC Father, served NS.
B) (examples)
1. New Citizen, SC Mother, Father not SC.
2. New Citizen, SC Father, No serve NS
3. MIS SC Mother, Father not SC
4. MIS SC Mother, Father SC, but nvr serve NS
For this scheme, A will have absolute priority over B, in RECOGNITION of their contribution towards the defence of sovereignty on this little red dot we called our HOME.

We welcome new citizens.. But we also appreciate the part play by male citizens who give their precious 2 years, and being operationally ready for many years after, in the protection of our HOME. -

A company that has revenue of nearly S$ a billion and more than 10,000 workers globally and in SG alone has about 4,000 workers
They employ engineers, IT, accountants, admin staff, etc and were in Jurong, operating 24/7, churning out precision engineering products for global brand name customers. The company is not Singaporean owned, the major shareholders are PRs, have been here for decades, their children study overseas in Oxbridge and Ivy league unis, paid by the parents. The children are not PRs. The company also has operations in their home country.
Now, why their employ foreign engineers ? because not enough local graduates and hardly any NUS / NTU engineers specialise in mechatronics. Poly and ITE trainees also not enough. They offer scholarship -- no takers. No choice, got customers, so have to go China universities to recruit engineers to Singapore, train them, apply PR for them (so that they don't get poached by competitors). Whose fault ? NUS & NTU. But the uni say nobody want to do those courses, hence they don't specialise in those area.....so they blame singaporeans for not wanting to study engineering in those areas. Tell you this : salary range is from S$4k to 10k, per month, for the experienced one, of course $10k is those holding management position.
Why they employ foreign IT staff ? The company runs SAP. Get a local / ST related firm to implement the system - set you back a few million $$ in consulting fees. Get the China team - less than half the cost, work faster, don't have fixed old way of unproductive way of doing things. Willing to do things unconventional way and think out of the box to solve implementation problems.
Why they employ foreign accountants ? Because Singaporean accountants / FC / accounts executives -- don't want to work in Jurong. I know, many of you say give me that pay I will work....but, truth be told, 90% of applicants are foreigners and even after signing Singaporeans on the employment letters, they don't even call you when they don't turn up on start date because they got another offer - lesser pay, but work in Shenton Way, more glam, more civilised, \"closer\" to entertainment centres, immediately after 5:30pm they are at the pub; while working in Jurong, after taking factory bus to MRT station, take the train to town will be 7pm, or even if they drive, it takes 30 min to 45 minutes to get to town in the evening peak hour. Heck, tell the HR, just hire those foreigners - lower pay (might as well), don't mind Jurong, and jobs get done. It is not about pay. No matter how high the pay is being raised in Jurong, Shenton Way will be higher to attract them over. It is a fact. there is pay differential between downtown and Jurong. but gov't does not allow factory to be built in Shenton Way leh, and JTC is not going to rent out factory in Shenton Way at Jurong / Tuas prices. By the way, SIA's accounts are done in China (or india)
Okay, those bankers. How many business / banking graduates they churn out per year from NUS/NTU/SMU ? They do a cross border project finance for US$50 million. They only know Singapore legal framework. they don't know how the China tax rules and foreign exchange rules work, and the money comes from UK for a Singapore company operating in China. complex cross border legal and tax structuring is needed. How many can see the big picture of such transaction ? It is funny how local banks call up their clients to ask for advice .... fine, these are high level stuff. Where are all the A level and diploma holders gone to ? who want to be a bank teller ? counter service staff ? all want to be VP and branch manager or do investment banking or RM....so who fill up those lowly positions ? I know, certain functions in banking has seen an influx of certain nationalities. But this has been :censored: .
yes, every day they are people being retrenched, like wise every day there are also people who found new jobs
every day there are people newly born into this world and there are people who has to say good bye to this world.....

I think I understand where you're coming from. I'm from the IT line and many people in IT are non-locals. At a macro level, I perfectly appreciate the rationale for hiring FTs. But at a micro level, my job is also threatened by FTs due to relentless cost cutting pressure. If *touch wood* one day I get replaced by a FT, of course it'll be very hard for me to welcome them with open arms. This is a bread and butter issue for me and I'm human afterall. So I much more than empathise with your situation. :salute:

Now technology is ubiquitous but business knowledge is niched to the specific industry/company. So to make it harder for us to get replaced, many of my colleagues entrenched themselves with the operational know-how whereby it's harder for the knowledge to be replicated. Or some of us learn to be good in a variety of connected but dissimilar technologies so that it takes 50% of 2 FTs to replace us rather than 100% of 1 FT, if you get what I'm saying. But if company die-die wants to cut cost ahead of all other considerations, I think we also bo-pian in the long run.
My wife recently bought many stuff from this gmart website and my brother bought his insurance from One Direct website, thereby totally bypassing the middleman. I guess the world has really changed from the old we grew up in. You ask me do I have a solution for all these issues? I don't.
What I do know is that every time I feel stressed about life, I go read the 'Life without limits' book by Nick Vujicic and it'll give me solace when I realised how lucky I am to be given so much oredi.Karl12:

Agree with what you have written. This immediate change policy also made me rather uncomfortable though I am a true SC. I think it is not fair for those PR who have put in hours of PV and now end up with zero chance of getting into the school if there is balloting. Why cant the new policy take effect next year? it is fairer to everyone who have already made plan for this year based on the previous years experience.My takes in this simple analogy......don't flame me if you disagreed.
When i invite my guests to my home, i welcome them with basic necessity which is basic courtesy in feeling warmth in my family, provision of drinks and food. If need to sleepover, then i will provide guest room. I will provide the best i can in my own capacity......of course not go to the extend of welcoming them to my master bedroom. Of course no way will i shove my guest to a corner. That wouldn't be right.
Today, PR already not in equal footing with SC in terms of health, education and housing. And hence i feel that is already enough. Just recently the education policy kicks in affecting PR with almost immediate effect left me with mixed feelings, especially more so towards PR who have PV. Although i am happy for SC in general but this immediate change makes me rather uncomfortable. I am a true SC but i am a mother myself. All mum wants the best for their children.
My takes and my humble opinion. This thread and also the other thread are becoming ugly to me. Why? People starts to be irresponsible with all sort of name callings, personal attacks and labelling. Is this what we are encouraging people to surface their ugliness? I thought this is a platform for CIVIL discussion and airing and sharing of views? -
