genie23:
hi, I am not a parent of an autistic child but I volunteer at church to teach catechism - and I 30 children 2 of whom are autistic. Any tips on how I may engage them without neglecting the others. I have co-volunteers so we could split the attention but don't want to make them feel they are being treated differently. They are P3 kids and wonderful boys.
Hi genie23,
Glad to see you here and you have a heart for asd kids!
If you are truly interested in this area, perhaps you can go and attend a seminar organized by the ARC (Autism Resource Centre) in Ang Mo Kio, at Pathlight school.
The run a quarterly course on \"Fundamentals of Autism\", the next run will be in June and September this year. During the 3-hour evening seminar, the trainer will share a lot of practical situations encountered to help the attendees understand this condition better and how to help these kids.

Lavendery,Thanks helplessmum for your wonderful review! I'll go and get the DVD

I wonder how many people out there in this world is as lucky as Temple Grandin? Have a wonderful mum and a scientist to help her. From what i know, apparently she's seems to be the only one in this world who is successful. How i wish there's more such Temple Grandin in this world
There are other famous ASD people in the world as well.
I found this link. But you are right, even so there are a few successful people, it doesnt mean our kids will be like them.
We need to also manage our own expectations of our kids. We must let them know how much we love them and we will always be supporting them.

Is how we see them n how to help them within their way n ability.
Is like not one method of teaching apply to all. Diff pp learn differently.
They definitely learn things in diff way.
They are more details thinking that why they are slow.
Example a normal kid see a plate it's just a plate.but to them it's a PLATE WITH A SHAPE N COLOR N HOW IT'S HOLD FOOD and so on. -
Helplessmum
Ya man! During the assessment, the psychologist told a picture story to my boy. He actually observed that the man in the book has torn pockets and carried three different colored keys! Normal kids canโt do that. -
ya, u see so they are being label jus becos they see things diff

as they feel is unncessary to have such details. Ahhhh...
when my son at traffic light. i ask him to press for red light, he spotted the screw and say Octagon.. i see & see where got octagon.. ahh... is the boo-Nut tat or spare parts of the thing la.... u see...
and \"they\" think they havin mental block cuz call & call no response, as they are focusing & analysising.. argh....
hate talking to this \"PEOPLE\" they are the one who having issue... Manz....
even if you are professor so What.. at times, if u see working ppl, those who down there know more things then them...
ahh. but still we loose out to these \"people\" as their testing & assement prove that is ASD and is a kind of \"disability la\"\"\" got to faceit.... -
helplessmum3:

I'm actually excited to know that my boy may possibly be gifted despite his disabilities.ya, u see so they are being label jus becos they see things diff

I still have high hopes for him altho I know his disabilities may work against his gifts. I have even shortlisted the secondary sch he may be keen to go next time. Lol.
You should also go find out more about gifted children and how to manage it.

=======
Signs of giftedness in a preschooler
Your 2- to 4-year-old may be gifted if she has some of these characteristics:
Has a specific talent, such as artistic ability or an unusual ease with numbers. For example, children who draw unusually realistic pictures or who can manipulate numbers in their head may be gifted.
Reaches developmental milestones well ahead of peers.
Has advanced language development, such as an extensive vocabulary or the ability to speak in sentences much earlier than other children of the same age.
Is relentlessly curious and never seems to stop asking questions.
Is unusually active (though not hyperactive). While hyperactive children often have a short attention span, gifted children can concentrate on one task for long periods of time, are passionate about their interests, and like to be challenged by difficult activities.
Has a vivid imagination. Gifted children often create a vast and intricate network of imaginary friends with whom they become very involved.
Is able to memorize facts easily and can recall arcane information learned from television shows, movies, or books.
Other signs of giftedness may be a little harder to discern. Some gifted children realize that they are \"different\" from their peers. This can make them feel isolated and withdrawn. It may also make them likely targets for bullying.
They may begin to experience intense frustration because they can think more rapidly than they can express themselves, verbally or physically. If your child appears unusually angry or frustrated, you may want to consult a mental health professional.

my son also manipulate with numbers.. i duno is tat consider manipulate..
example some number 2 , u noe in car park wall? they write number 2 differently not typical 2. my son at times will say 2 then follow up 5.. is upside down of 2 like 5.
with number 9, he will say 9 then he turn and say 6.. or take 1 & put it next to example 6, and he will say 16 then he turn the 6 to 9 then say 19...
are these consider manipulating?
