I got \"My first Pic Dic\" for #1 then. Teacher did not use. So when it came to #2, I already hv a copy. But still the teacher did not use. Anyway, it is a lousy dict. So many characters are omitted. I bou a Times Chinese Character Dict (see attached), it is more useful and easy to use as it has big fonts (compared to a regular dict) and has simple English explanations.
Do let your child learn to check up characters independently as young as possible. My #1 was spoon fed, even now as a P6 pupil, he prefer to ask me directly. #2 is more independent.

As for the Arts and Music textbooks, #2 did not use them in P1. But in P2, the teachers in charge used them. I would suggest you buy the 2nd hand ones. They are hardly used, so most of them are in good condition. -

2) Optional Stationery ( item 12-30 in list-2 )
This list is really optional.
Item 25, 26 and 27 might be useful.
#2 uses item 27 frequently this year. -
For your List 2, item 1 to 4 can buy half the qty indicated. Only P1 uses broad line exercise book. Spelling, Mental sums sure need. Item 5 A6 Notebook is completely useless. The line spacing is so narrow.
You might want to buy a plastic folder for keeping worksheets/letters to parents. -

Thank you very much for your detail explanation and suggestions on the booklist items.
Your “guides” is very helpful, at least I won’t buy the “My First Picture Dictionary” first.

Hi Jennifer,
You mentioned your #1 was from BPPS before entering PHPPS… is PHPPS a better sch in your opinion/from experience? We are doing PV at BPPS but are wondering if we should go for PHPPS instead. We are looking for a new place and thought we can perhaps move near (1.25km) to PHPPS and try our luck but knowing there will be balloting for 1-2km, we are undecided.
Hope you can share your experience with us. TIA. -

I cant comment which is better becos they are different. Besides our experience were 3 years ago. I heard that BPPS has a new principal too. There were just some reasons which prompt us opt for a transfer.
Since you are doing PV at BPPS, how comfortable are you with the sch?
Some reasons:
During my elder boy's time, there was no streaming from P2 to P3. Do the sch practise streaming for P2 to P3 now? Personally I prefer streaming as early as possible.
My boy joined IT Club in P3. Then before the Jun hols started, we received a letter informing us that the IT Club had to release the pupils who joined the club in semester 1 so that new members could come on board in semester 2. Reasons cited were limited resources to accommodate interested pupils for the whole year.
BPPS is not a SAP school. Pupils do not take HCL in P4. Hubby wanted our boy to consider Hwa Chong and believed that early exposure to HCL would be beneficial.
In P3, the FT did not give PE lessons at all. Only after the SA did she allow the pupils to have more PE lessons. Similarly, my boy did not have the stipulated Music, Arts&Crafts and Civics lessons on the weekly basis. These were only covered after SAs.
Like I have mentioned, things at BPPS might be different now. Esp now that the sch has been reducing P1 intake over the years, resources for CCA might be more abundunt now. And under the leadership of the new principal, maybe lessons for non-core subjects are now conducted regularly.

hi jennifer,
#1 will be in pei hwa P1 next year. don’t quite know what to expect… & would appreciate advice re mundane stuff like:
- how much pocket $ to give (would $1 be enough?)

- need to let him bring extra pants (don’t know if he’ll soil himself rollEyes)
is there any other details to take note of?
