      Hi daddy and mummy,

Would like to check... Is 'Model Drawing' to be taught in Pri 1?

      TIA 😄
Some of the better school, yes but some no. So I can't give you the actual answer!

It's not part of the syllabus according to MOE and it's not a topic in the textbook (it is a topic in P2).

However, some schools want to give the kids a headstart to early understanding of model representations, so they do start teaching.

My personal take: Don't expect them to draw a model, but you can provide a model when going through problem sums with them to expose them to models.
Use different colours and explain to them that it simply represents a number.

        Hope this helps.

Hi Michaelia0816, thank you for the reply… 😄

Hi mrswongtuition, thank you for the reply and the suggestion on the use of different colour, that will really help the little one to visualise… 😄

Just wondering, if the school did not teach, is it ok for the child to apply this concept when answering questions during homework time?

It's alright for them to draw a simple model to help visualize, but no marks will be awarded. They will still need to write their number sentence clearly.

I've attached a sample of a P3 question which I used different colours to help differentiate. You can do something similar. Your kiddo will definitely love getting to use colours! 🙂

Another P6 question where colour is used:

How to teach a child to find the answer of ? - 2 = 6? The school teacher asked us to use number bond but my son seems can’t get it and is there other way to do?

Hi! Some of us use counting method, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 so answer 8 like that. Or using something like drawing like below
                  I--I--I--I--I--I--I--I
                  . .
                  1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6 7. 8
                  The . Means +1

Hi,Michaelia0816, thanks for your reply and yes it’s easier for the child to understand indeed but is it ok to not to use number bond?

Will the future exercise base on this and the child is not laying strong foundation?

It actually depend how your child know the method more at, try teaching both of them, make up a question and test your child, see if your child would much prefer at. Soon after, the children would be learning multipucation, at that time, your child may mastered the number bond!
