      24hr-mum:
      there were twice as many blue clips as yellow clips. aft gvg away 66 blue n 8 yellow clips, there were thrice as many yellow as blue clip left. how many clip were there at first? how to do?

      Hi

      I will use unit method here, but you can simply convert it into MD.

      At first,
      Blue : Yellow
      --> 2 x (1u + 33) : 1u + 33
      --> 2u + 66 : 1u + 33

      In the end,
      Blue : Yellow --> 1:3
      --> 2u : 1u + 25
      --> 2u : 6u
      So, 5u --> 25, 1u --> 5

      At first,
      Blue : Yellow --> 76 : 38 -- total 114 clips.

      using MD --> http://tinyurl.com/mathizzzfun-2D-120502

      cheers.

        HTH..

        Before:
        Blue clips ----- 2units
        Yellow clips ----- 1unit

        After:
        Blue clips ----- 1 part ( 2u-66)
        Yellow clips ----- 3 parts (1u-8)

        1 part ------ 2u-66
        So 3 parts ----- 6u-198

        6u-198 = 1u-8
        5u = 190
        1u = 38

        There were 3 units of clips at first
        3u ----- 3 x 38 = 114 clips

                      There was an equal number of boys and girls in the class at first. Halfway, another 12 boys came into the class and 8 girls left the class. In the end, there were twice as many boys as girls in the class. How many students were there in the class at first?

                      Thank you.

                        Hi

                        For P4 kids, a neat way is to use MD.

                        Hope this helps.

                        Best wishes
