A likely way P4 kids would use will be MD.

There are alternate ways to present the MD.

As usual, I’ve drawn more MD than necessary, once students understand the logic behind the solution, they may consolidate the steps.

The number of blue clips is twice the number of yellow clips.

We want to make a comparison so as to get the answers.

During a quiz a correct answer would be awarded 3 points while 2 points would be deducted from a participant for a wrong answer. For every 6 questions answered, Jane managed to get 5 of them correct. Given that jane earned a total of 104 points, how many questions did Jane answer correctly?


Ds 's teacher uses the on sponge method called "number of units and value of units". He asked me when should he use this method cos he thinks it’s possible to use guess and check too. Is there any way to tell? Do youthink model can be used here?

guess and check can be used but it is not efficient for this question. For this question, one can use the grouping concept.
Since for every 6 questions, Jane answered 5 correctly, and therefore 1 wrongly, she would score 15-2 =13 points for every 6 question.
104/13 = 8 ie 8 groups of 6 questions --> 5 questions were answered correctly in each group, so 8 x 5 = 40 questions were answered correctly.

Same as MathIzzzFun mentioned, I think 'grouping concept' will be a better choice.

Given that for every 6 questions answered (1 group), Jane managed to get 5 of them correct, so Jane earned (15-2) = 13 points

Total score is 104 points

104 / 13 = 8 groups

8 x 5 = 40 questions were answered correctly.
