PRC might not know our school curriculum, areas to be tested on, etc. Besides the modern PRC child is like our own children, speaks very little Mandarin, except to their own family.
Talking about tuition, just now at Berries I witness a PRC parent registering his child. Then I scratch my head. :scratchhead:Jennifer:
First, a strong foundation & the right attitude towards learning means lesser reliance on tuition -> can save a lot of money and time.
Later I analysed that there is no need to feel strange about this bcos some parents maybe very good in certain subjects but they may not be inclined to teach. Did I share that last year I taught ds many wrong things ...... he told me. -
Joyfulhands:
\"building a strong foundation (esp in lower pri)\"- this I did way before my children started formal pri sch education.Ideally, building a strong foundation (esp in lower pri) + instilling independent learning leads to lesser coaching by parents (ie less stressful), right?
Question is, how to do that?
I was in accounts during my first pregnancy. My colleagues always said I was doing θζ. When he was a toddler, I introduced numbers, Lego and puzzles, subsequently abacus and music lessons. Followed by books, enrichment EL lessons from P1 to P3. And a writing course at Catherine Khoo where he had his first story book published.
But I had problems with independently learning during his P4 year. We fought a lot esp in CL until I formally declared I washed my hands off. That end of year exam, most of his scores slipped. I think that was a wake up call for him. He had very responsible teachers in P5 and P6. Going to NJC is a blessing too. In a small cohort, he is easily identified as one of the high ability students and is given more opportunities.
We are very blessed that he has reached maturity. -

My son flunked Chinese paper 2...managed to pass Math. Now waiting for results of science as well as CL & Eng compo and oral, whether these can pull up the overall grade. I am totally demoralized :gloomy:
Hi Janet
Not too sure whether our DS is in the same claz.....my ds results so far were similar to what you said about your DS..... I am also totally demoralized and don't know how to coach him. He has barely 4.5 months now to prepare for the BIG exam !!!!and don't know where he will end up in next year .....

I was impressed with the NJC presentation in PH recently. One of the choice schools I hope my sons can get into. They don't have HCL, right?

HCL is compulsory for year 1 & 2. At end of year 2, can opt not to do HCL in year 3 onwards.Jennifer:

I understand that RI is also doing HCL.
My last understanding of HCL in Hwa Chong is the new student can opt not to do HCL in year 1 onwards. I believe this is case by case review.
Not sure of NUSHigh.
ACS(I) HCL is not compulsory. -
