Excuse the delay, reading the posts .... I am fascinated with the myriad of issues and perceptions.
What topics were you trying to manage?raymansg:
Ran out of ideas trying to manage school topics for my 9 year old and frustrated with some of the life skills being taught at my son's school ie. none. I get the impression that the only thing they expect is that he behaves like a robot (follows all instructions, logical or otherwise 100 %) and score well in his exams..
Stumbled on this forum, still browsing though the pages and with luck, I get get some guidance from the in house 'guru's and forumers.
On my son, mainly on a solution (likely won' be a wonder pill option) to guide him on choosing the correct path for himself at school. He does not sit still in class and talks a lot. I was like that as well when I was young but this is just not tolerated at all in school.
While I set schedules and behavioural standards at home, I allow a certain amount of flexibility as long as he can give me a reason on why he did something we didn't agree on earlier. I try almost all the time to give him time to explain himself. I understand in school that he is not given this opportunity and I can understand why as well. With so many kids, classes would go into overtime if this is allowed.
Its like I try to follow the 'best' practices if I may call them that but he is not getting the same message at home and in school. If I follow the school, then I am denying him the opportunity to answer for his actions. The last thing I want is for him to rebel behind my back.
And I do have a question to contribute on mock exams.
A diver finds a black object at the bottom of the ocean. Provide 3 methods he can use to tell that its alive or not. Answer : Poke it with a stick, poke it again and then poke it for the 3rd time. I found it funny and creative, and yes 0 marks.
The answer was to check if it needed air, food or water. I would have given that answer 0 as well ... but then again, I am not a scientist. :? -
hmm, open ended questions begat open ended answers
such a Q would need a flexible marking scheme.
your son should have gotten 1 mark at least. he can say, i would poke it with a stick to see if it will respond to changes in the environment.
or i poke it a 2nd time to see if it will move (locomotion is a characteristic of living things, in particular, animals)
then he will get 2 marks.
but then, i did not get to set the marking scheme.
