My dh gets very irritated whenever he hears the prc hawkers say ‘tu dou’ instead of ‘gang dang’ or ‘ma ling shu’ for potatos. And from prc newsreaders ‘兰花’ instead of ‘胡姬花’, ‘空调’ instead of ‘冷气’。We are being invaded, including the languag we have been using for years.

'tu Dou' is potato? Not some bean ? :rotflmao:
Seriously, I always say 'Leng qi' (air con). What is 'kong tiao'? To me, it means 'adjusting the air'.

someone wrote to the chinese papers recently lamenting why CNY became chunjie and not xin nian. I also prefer xin nian cos we don’t have 4 seasons in the first place and xin nian means a brand new start which sounds better to me. I will greet with xin nian kwai le and not chun jie kwai le.

Agree! I still prefer gan dang, ma ling shu and xin nian kuai le.
