the workshop is free. I conduct it to share the technique with other parents and hopefully, in turn, they will teach their children. The workshop is for parents because most children are not familiar with simultaneous equations yet and I can't spend the time teaching them algebra and simultaneous equations. It would take too long.

I plan to conduct a workshop in June/July timeframe. It will be on a Saturday morning, 9am - 12.15pm at the Geylang Evangelical Free Church. Please indicate which Saturday will be good for you. The church have graciously allowed us to use their premises without costs.

Most teachers would not encourage the use of Algebra at this level. Only in P6 do most teachers teach Algebra to varying degrees. In fact, in P5 but mostly P6, using model method to tackle certain qns require lots of slicing n dividing one unit into many units. This becomes too complex n the solution of combining models n algebra to solve the qns is easier to carry out.
In fact, it is best to learn as many methods as possible n has the wisdom to know which method or combination of methods to best solve a qn.

at P4 level, parents can start teaching the basics of algebra ie. what is an equation, what is an unknown variable, moving numbers from left hand side to right hand side, concept of negative numbers. So that when they move on to P5, they already have the foundation and can start using algebra to solve problems.
at P4, just lay the foundation. Don't link algebra to problem solving yet. Just learning the mechanics of solving a simple equation will be sufficient.

:goodpost: Yes, I totally agreed with what you said. Introduced the mechanics 1st, positive and negative number and changing of signs when changing positions on either side of the equation. And the Distributive property of multiplication as well.

Yep. We did just that 24hr-mum. But cannot have lapse in coaching especially if you have a forgetful girl (and not so motivated in math) like my DD1. She's in P5 now but still no tuition yet. :xedfingers: She scored either mid or high Band 2s but we are ok with it. So i suppose it also depends on the parents' and child's expectations. For us, if she makes conscientious effort and yet just makes it with a decent pass we are still ok. We dun really have any expectations. So we dun frown so much upon whatever comes really. But still that said... careless mistakes are still :frustrated:!

what cimman will cover is more than forming equation and moving unknown variables.
my husband said the workshop is useful, but maybe a bit too advance for an average P4 kid to learn now, although it is good that he as a parent knows the standard of the math Qs that will be coming up and how these could be tackled using cimman's approach.
i think cimman is suggesting we as P4 parents introduce formation of equation and moving of unknown variables as a prelude to algebra.
