Hi, I know some of you may want to throw rocks at me for my comments. I am really wondering aloud the purpose of all these comparisons and how it will help in the learning process of our children in the Gep other than adding unnecessary stress. We should aim to improve our child's personal best/worse/average. If first we compare with classmates, then with the whole class, then with the school, then across schools, and perhaps next step would be intl GEPs of all countries, there would be no end to comparing. Gep is a learning process. What can I do with all these statistics, can someone enlighten me?

For me, I use it to motivate my DS to put in more effort on his weaker subject which is Maths. After he saw almost all school can achieve 100%, he realised his honeymoon period is over and it works for me as he admitted his weaknesses and promise not to spend so much time on the computer.
I don't think any of us here wish to compare with other intl GEPs of other countries at all. Gep is definitely a learning process and our kids need us to motivate them to do their best in whatever they do.

Personally, I look at it from a different perspective. From macro view, this statistic offers a comprehensive view on individual school’s strengths. On top of it, it provides us a view which are the subjects that the kids are having difficulties in coping with as a whole.

From micro view, it instills motivation to my DD. She is putting in concerted effort to strengthen her subject weakness.

Merely comparing of statistic does not serve its purpose which I believe parents in this kaisu forum are not looking purely from this perspective.

I have not shown DS the stats yet but looking at the averages of the various schools for maths, then did i realise how high the standard is for Maths :nailbite:
Hence, will definitely do my utmost to improve DS's math :nunchuk:

I just want to add some comments here, the statistic data didn’t show some background information, for example how many mock tests were done by school before formal test. Some school did a few but some school did nothing, then the result will show you the big difference for that subject between schools, I guess GE office didn’t define the standard here and leave it to each school to decide. So compare within the school is more meaningful. If too much pressure from the parents due to the different results of schools, GE office may change their mind even won’t provide the information which help you identify your child’s weakness among the peers in his school.

Information is good and especially factual information. How information is used is in your hands. As parents, we have to understand what motivates our child and of course, every individual is different. We aim not to use the information to demotivate or punish! The aim is to provide the necessary support so they will not be demotivated in the journey and to motivate them to have the confidence and believe in themselves.

Showed my DS the numbers, he does not seem to be affected/motivated by it. Moving ahead is more important.

Ya, not all kids wanna be at the top of the 1%.

If only all the GEP ctrs have affiliated sec schools...then they can take their minds off the paper chase and really enjoy the curriculum. But then again, many parents are still targetting the handful of TOP schools! :evil:

Yesterday brought DS to SingaporeDisovery Centre for visit. They are having a small temporary exhibition on "Will Singapore Collapse?" addressing the facts our nation is facing and threatening to our nation. Very informative. On top of that DS enjoyed the 3D movie shows and the F1 remote car play there too.


Science centre also having an exhibition on the past and the present laboratory equipments, thinking should we go for a visit or not as DS going for the science fest workshop this month end.
