      k1r31:

Just read \"tamarind\" post regarding Sage books from Popular. Looks like http://www.popular.com.sg don't sell these books anymore. Found the website from HK instead:

      http://www.sagebooks.com.hk/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.browse/category_id,7/Itemid,26/

They are selling 1 book at HK$109, so 5 books total HK$545 (S$98.0376). Wow....quite exp (compare to popular selling at S$5.9 each?)

Anyone knows where to find this book in Singapore? Thanks....

According to Popular, this book has been on the market for quite some time already and the publisher has decided not to print anymore. Therefore, what you see on the shelves at Popular and on their website, is what you can get. I guess maybe you can try trading forums and online auctions?

Tamarind, just want to say a big THANK YOU for recommending the Sage books in this thread. Flashcards (he hates them!), wink to learn DVD and the readers recommended by Schellen all couldn't make my boy (just turned 3) recognise and read chinese characters. But the Sage books are amazing, in about 3 mths, he completed the 5 books in the Beginner series, that means learning his 1st 100 characters! He loves the cute illustrations in the books and the large word size helps to encourage reading.

I am currently residing overseas and bought the books directly from the HK publisher. The HKD 109 price includes delivery and shipping costs regardless of the destination. Asked them why Popular is able to sell them at S$5.90 but they didn't respond on that. The funny thing was the books are retailing at HKD 48 in HK!

There are altogether 5 levels (5 books in each level). I am eager to purchase the subsequent levels. Unfortunately, they do not publish simplified version for them. I wonder why 😞

        dimsum,
You are welcome 😄 It is amazing that your boy who just turned 3 is able to complete the 5 books ! He is very bright. I think children are more interested to learn from books with complete sentences, as compared to flash cards or learning individual words.

I am trying to get the following series of books from http://www.dangdang.com. I have never seen it before, but there are excellent reviews. My credit card cannot work with http://www.dangdang.com, still looking for ways to buy this series.

        幼儿快速识字阅读法
        http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20645179

A very cute customer review :

I realized that it is best not to let her read books with hanyu pinyin because she may become too dependent on it.

Ditto. I never borrow Chinese books with hanyu pinyin for mine. & I pride myself for his strong word recognition due to this 😄

& for kids with phonics background - hanyu pinyin is a breeze to pick up.

Hi Tamarind, for S'pore issued credit cards, dangdang only accepts citibank. This is because only citibank card offers this visa/master card secure code thing. I had ordered from dangdang before (once). Then blur like sotong me cancelled my citibank card few mths ago, forgetting that this is the only card that I can purchase from dangdang. I LOVE the wide collection of chinese books from dangdang too. Thanks for your recommendation above. Yeah, the reviews are so fantastic. Now, I am keen to get it too but too bad, I don't have citibank card now 😞

That's right hanyu pinyin is very easy for kids who knows phonics.

In fact, kids should be trained to use hanyu pinyin only to look up words in the dictionary, not for reading entire books.

                      Hi K1r31,

Hey, thanks for that. A great saving. I bought RM5.50 each book from Harris JB.

Will try to get from the agent. 25% is a quite a lot of saving.

                      Hi apple79,

Thanks. I am very keen on this set of books too but couldn’t find sample pages.

I got to check any bp on dangdang.

                      Thanks

Hi Charmaine, yes apple79 is right. About 50% of the before discount book cost. It's listed on the shipping/delivery section of the website. May seem steep, but even after taking into consideration, I see many books still cheaper than buying from S'pore bookstores.
