I personally prefer the unabridged originals. The adapted versions just do not have the 'flavour'...my personal opinion. If it is too difficult, we'll read alound together.


We have the unabridged Wizard of Oz and the pop-up book as well.
Robert Sabuda has other amazing pop-up books - The Dinosaurs and Sea Creatures are fascinating for boys. If you have friends/relatives in US, get them to buy there and bring back for you - much cheaper.

The other good classic book I would like to add is :
Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.
Not the Disney or adapted versions but the creative Edition :

any mommy can advice me?
My dd is only 14 months and i am trying very hard to read her a story book.
Myself not a book lover since young cos dont have that kind of habbit but i dont mind to start reading again for my dd but no matter how i read to her she will want to hold the book and keep turning the pages and aft that she will just put the book on the floor and do her things so i try to read to her during her sleep time when she is drinking her milk and that will keep her still. Is this Normal for a 14 month old girl? Pls advice what should i do. Thank you very much.

It is normal. My baby girl 16th months does that too.

I read lots of books to her daily. We point the words while reading. Sometimes she would just sit on my lap and concentrate, sometimes she wouldn't want to look at it but playing instead. Sometimes she would take the book to me ask me to read out. She would even ask me to sing song that she likes.

If she turn on pages she likes, i just read and elaborate on that particular page, no need to rush turning to another page. Give her ample time.

Eventhough she is running or playing while your are reading. Don't worry, they are learning. They learn in different way.

Aside of books, i expose her to nursery rhymes, chinese poems and story through cd. She also watch educational dvd daily.

You can try wo hui du from library. It is quite costly if you buy. It separates from picture. A page of sentence and the next page is picture.

My girl just like it. If she doesnt show interested i change to next one. No forcing.

I used to flash to her but she didn't like it.

DS2 (3y/o) also can’t keep attention too long. Sometimes I’ll just open the book and play ‘where’s wally’, other times when he’s really fidgety, I’ll just let it go and say ‘ok stop’ - this is usually enough to elicit a response.

Anyway, keep up with the reading - I find that daily reading (maybe 10 min each time). DS2 is now very interested in books although he can’t read, he’ll insist on bedtime story each night.

Reading to your child will also facilitate bonding…I think they like that we are spending time with them, and listening to our voices.

same as the other mummies’ advices, just keep on reading. Their attention span will get longer and it will soon become a habit. Sometimes when i read my girl and she walk away i will continue reading out loud, she will kaypoh and come and see what i am reading cos I ignore her and seem more interested in the book than her and it helps to read loud in different tone. Sometimes I feel like a clown haha.

Haaa, i experience that too.

While my children are playing or running about i just continue reading aloud.

Both my chilren, girl 16mth old and boy 3.5 yo would take a look on the book i am reading aloud if interest them.

I read from other forums. Some parents spend 2-3 hours reading and reading to their young kids daily.

Reading is a key to knowledge.

Hi charmaine: usually i will let her choose what she want me to read then she will be more willing to sit down to listen. sometimes the same book she will want me to read many times. I can memorise them already.


2-3 hrs! I am a FTWM. The most I can manage is abt 1 hr or so… usually abt 30 to 45 mins.

Haaa…

We (my helper and I) read, play, read. They like books but my son doesn’t ready to read by himself. He does recognise some words with many repetition.

In short, we (my helper and I ) spend min 10 min to 90 min reading aloud to them. Some read while pointing the words, some we just read while they are playing.

When search through some bloggers and forums, you will be amazed lots of young kids can read so well.

There is this yahoo forum : teachyourbabytoread. This proud papa does that. Read and read tons of books, about 2-3 hours daily. His son same age as mine is independant reader. He does share his experience in another forum call brillkids.
