LOLMum:

Doubt so cos I am always happy when I am back.

There are things I don't like but not enough to drive me away from this island. :imanisland: :imanisland:

Good for you. 🤷 For me, I am having some sort of \"culture shock\" when ever I am back to the country.

I feel that the neighbouring country seems less crowded, less bicycles ringing at me to hurry up, and more space to walk.

When I first brought my wife to Jakarta for the first time, she was so not used to the much slower pace of life. People walk slower, escalators are slower, traffic is slower, etc. And people are also more contented with their lives there. It was an eye opener for her for sure and she appreciated life in sg more afterwards.

Whenever we step out of Singapore, even if it is just across the border, DH and I have to remind ourselves that we are back to the 'normal' pace of life - Singapore is uniquely fast and rush.
Agree. I don't find limlim's posts offending and I don't think mod is referring to limlim.

            :grphug: 😉

Ha, you are back. Eh, you still haven't explained your earlier post. The one on national income. I really don't see the connection... :?
well.. from observations, seems like most of those who are \"contended\" are the ones who are quite well-off.. in the sense that they own a car? able to go for holiday overseas like once a year? able to buy brand bags? live in private properties? engage expensive tutors? all or some of the above..

So, I guess, generally, if the person is doing quite well in Singapore ($10k/mth household income? number pluck from thin air) and able to afford most of the things they want.. it is easier to be contended in Singapore.

            That's about it..

In other words.. if I make like $10k/mth, I would be contended too.... and feel that Singapore is actually quite a nice place..

Of coz there will be pple who make $20k/mth and still not happy with Singapore..

But I'm just saying.. the lesser the income, the more likelihood of being unhappy with the current Singapore.

I think the problem is if ppl earn 10k/mth they live like they earn 20k/mth coz they think with the increment and bonuses coming along they can do that. Some ppl just didn't think of what if.......

Btw, why so many complaints and hates nowadays? Can't someone start a thread \"What I love about the current Singapore\" to be more positive?

I get what you mean - in short I (or anyone in the same situation) am not complaining because I have enough (if not have in excess). Sure, I agree with you that someone who has enough or have excess is definitely in a happier position than someone who has insufficient. But it's all relative and more importantly, the idea of \"enough\" is subjective. As soon as one is beyond the staples, it is all a state of mind. By any standard, I would be deemed as \"have enough\". But I believe there are many more folks in similar blessed state but are still unhappy.
I grew up in a rough neighborhood where neighbors are professional gamblers/gambling den owners, drunkards, wife beaters, loan sharks, hardcore criminals, race horse punters, drug abusers and gangsters. I started working in a school uniform shop when I was only twelve, earning $12 + 2 meals for a 12hour day. Why? To pay for my secondary one school fees + textbooks. I did not recall feeling aggrieved but I remembered telling my mum that I felt happy to be able to earn my keep and pay for my school expenses.

I have two elder brothers. One brother had to give up the opportunity to further his studies in the uni for the other. My father told me,\"I have no money to put you through tertiary education.\" I remembered telling him,\"no problem. I don't want to waste your money anyway, since I didnt have excellent grades.\" but I knew, education is my only ticket out of poverty. After o levels, I got a job at a restaurant and worked my a** off just so that I could have enough for a polytechnic education. After the diploma, I got a job at one of the big four accounting firm, earning only $1300 per month. Purse string was so tight that I had to eat plain gardenia bread for lunch on most days. But still, I was grateful to be working in a big 4.

Aiya, spare you from my long story. In short, I didn’t start of with a silver spoon in my mouth when I was born and my parents belonged to the lowest income group. But even during those hard days, I was able to find something to be thankful for.

I am not trying to paint a "I am a saint" picture. I just want to bring across the point - having enough and feeling blessed is a state of mind.

Having previously lived abroad with my family makes me appreciate this country a lot more. I love Singapore and I’m thankful to be able to raise my kids here.
