How to save electricity?

This topic, my wifey is very good at it:


- Turn off power switches at the power outlet when the appliance is not in use.

- Record your own PUB usage by looking at meter and submit to PUB. Don't let them use estimated readings!

- Wifey say 1 TV for whole house. No TV in rooms :sick:

- Turn off modem when not in use. Most of us have a habit of learning internet modem turned on

- Don't stay at home too often! Go out for a swim or cycling! Bonds family ties!

- Boil your water and keep the hot water in thermo flash instead of using those electric water flask.

- Pay your PUB bills using POSB Everyday card, save 1%.

Imami, do you mean the increase is $10? Should be ok. I know of people staying in 5 rm HDB paying more than $500 a month for electricity bill. I think it is alot. Another person told me he paid about $800!!!

I am very particular about utility bills. Not sure why too... I mean it's just $10 bucks more but I am like :frustrated: :stompfeet:

Despite having a lower than average utiliy bill than most singaporeans in the same housing category, we are still very mindful about using water and electricity.

Does the increase of $10 translate to more usage or increase in PUB electricity rate?

Oh my goodness, my utility bill each month is $350. I have cracked my brain many times how to cut down on the bills but doesn't seem to work.

$350 is a lot! You stay in bungalow or what?

Behind each mth's bill, there's this chart comparing utility consumption between similar households. Yours is way above the average?

Mine is actually only bordering average; for gas it's actually way below since we seldom cook at home.

Ooops - i thought my $360 was good. It is way below the average consumption for similar households. Hmmmm...... i'll see how i can do better.

Can I check for those heater that are central heating, do the charges fall under Gas or electricity?

How about modem? It is on 24/7 in our house.. Does it consume alot of electricity? We were told by the service provider guy that it is okay to leave it on 24/7 but i wonder will the box get spoilt by the heat it generated? :roll:

I have this feeling that all engineers will tell you the same thing. Leave the modem on it will not consume alot of electricity. Now I think back to switch off whatever not in use regardless what service provider tell you.

Not true, I have been told by my IT friend that laptops, modems, set-top boxes etc consume more electricity if shut down and started up again every day. They also spoil faster coz it takes more energy and effort to start up from scratch.


Should only unplug if not using for the next few days.

This is a variant of what my dw said. She said the same thing with regards to leaving the toilet lights on. She also talked to some engineers.

I see… I am okay to leave the modem on 24/7 if it’s not going to make a great difference on my pub bills, juz abit concerned about the hotness of the box whenever i happened to touch it…


talking about this, now i recalled the server in my office is also on 24/7 but it was placed in a room where the air-conditioning is also on 24/7…
