if my son does not ve ASD, does he ve behaviour problems? other den kkh, where can i bring him to access his behaviour? he doesnt like to befriend other children or play with other children. in school, when he sees other kids touch his water bottle, he screams, when someone he doesnt like sits besides him, he screams, when he doesnt gets his favourite toy, he screams, & he is the only 1 screaming in school. the teacher asked me to bring my son to see a child pyscology...haiz :scratchhead:mummyJune:
hi mums, my 3yr old son has been to checkup @ kkh since last yr, the doc said he has speech-language delay but i am beginning to suspect he might have mid-austic behaviour. he attended two sessions @ HPB, 2nd session the therapist said he has mild-improvement but i doubt so since she is only with him for 45mins.
my son attends fullday childcare. Recently he hates going to school, even wear uniform is a torture to him. he will scream & cry loudly. when reached school he will scream & cry loudly. A teacher i met told me my son will scream & cry at least 3times a day, even roll on the floor & cry when he cannot gets what he wants.
he is unable to hold conversation with us, even simple words like mummy daddy he also refuse to say. the doc at kkh said for my son age, is considered self-centered & anti-social which is very true. (yesterday i brought him to bookshop, a little gal abt 5yrs old came up & say hello to my son, immediately he screamed, the little gal frightened & ran away to her mother) , not only this, sometimes ppl smile at him at when we buy things, want to make payment, the aunties will smile at him & say hello, immediately my son starts to scream & cry. i duno y he is like that. i feel very stress up sometimes as ive a younger baby at home & cannot afford to always let my son scream & cry loudly as he will affect the younger's sibling sleep.
this is not ASD. as he is very aware.. -

Hi happystar
Hi chibi, it's always encouraging and informative reading your post. According to teacher, my son's attention span is only about 10 mins, after which he will fidget and play with other things nearby or even walk away. However, he's always able to answer questions when asked. How did you gradually stop your gal from walking to the other class? For writing task at P1, is your gal able to sit through and complete her task? Can share tips on how to hold attention? The psychologist also highlighted my son should be sitting at the front so that he is within sight of the teacher.
Good to know your gal now has many friends. So does she still need to attend any therapy at all?
my daughter attention span is quite bad too, she is better at 1-1 teaching in my opinion .lol as long as your son is not causing any disturbances in class and is able to answer questions, it is ok if his attention span is not very good.this is what the teacher told me, especially when i ask her about my daughter's attention span problem, this is what she told me and says, but your daughter knows her work, so it is ok seriously. like what she says, they learn by listening, their hearing are super sharp!
my daughter stops going to other classes when she attended P1. I was quite worried initially when she started school in january, will she go to other classes and go missing during lesson ? :yikes:
but she didn't. she stopped that habit once she went in primary school. i guess it might be she is just seated infront of the teacher, makes it impossible for her to walk away like that without the teaching calling her back. :rotflmao:
my daughter can sit still and complete her tasks in class. the teacher says she is ok with it but just that has the bad habit of not reading instructions, Eg instructions says to underline, she go n circle the answer
i try to remind my daughter to pay attention in class by keep telling her that if she really likes her teacher and respect her teacher, plse look at the teacher when the teacher is teaching, do not look around , the teacher will be very sad , and i am sure that she does not want her teacher to be sad.
i am still trying to improve her attention span tho, haha will let you know once i figure out a more foolproof method. :rahrah:
my daughter is not attending any therapy now, but her allied educator has lesson with her once a week to teach her social stories.
I remember one lesson was, on meeting new friends.
have faith and hope that our kids will strive and succeed .
I have faith in my daughter, and i know that with support and encouragement from my family and her friends and teachers, she can make it big :rahrah:
by the way, which i think its worth a try, when your son goes to P1, buy another set of school workbook for him to do at home too coupled with some assesement books. with regular practice, your son will be able to manage well in class .
This is what i do , cause i know that my daughter's attention span is weak, so i try to teach her in advanced before the school teaches the next lesson.
i told her because you don't pay good attention in class, so another set of worksheets for you! haha she always goes
... hehe
Hi chibi, are you a SAHM or you have only 1 child? You sound like you prepare your gal very well, preparing social stories and teaching her school work in advance. My son can concentrate at sit down task when there's 1-1 supervision. I hope he can do this independently. How many years was your gal on therapy before you stopped her? Which centre did she attend?

Hi happystar,
i am a working mum with 2 kids
DD1 whom i mention here and another 18 months old DS2 :rahrah:
Usually i will leave work on the dot at 6pm, then reach home slightly before 7pm to have a quick dinner.
then quickly start school home work and revision with my daughter as well as talk to her about her school routine etc.
I try to spend time equally with both kids , hehe so weekdays after walking my daughter to school, it wil be back to bringing my DS2 out for breakfast and playground before heading to office.
Luckily there is a maid and my mum to help out with the household chores and cooking at home.
i usually spend Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning to teach my daughter her school work.
Have to push her a little bit as i know that she will need lotsa hard work and help to compensate her lack of attention in class.
My daughter was on therapy when she was around Mid K1 until end of K2 .
She went to KKH for her therapy ,we will go to st andrew hospital location ( near my house). -
Helplessmum, my boy is potty trained since he was about 2.5 years. All thanks to my mum who helped me train him. But at night, he still need diaper though. And I hv also stopped wearing diapers for him in sch and when we go out when late last year.
Today I brought him to see another therapist, the therapist was spot on on his issues. He is going to start new therapy this Fri.
Mommyjune
My boy used to make noise when strangers try to speak to him too. Now much better already, now he will show a very concern face when strangers try to get near him but if the person offer him food or toys he like, then he warm up. If u think the Kkh doc canβt give good advise, try private psychologist? And did see the child development unit in Kkh? They didnβt refer u to EIPIC? -

hiaz. more therapies will definitely help..but u see KKH therapis they are more like evaulate then tell parents what to do.. but u know we are not expert, if they do 5mins , my son absorb compare to us do 5days oso haven absorb, kkh strategic are very disappointing...
it is very hard to find a therapist who can spot on our child. some are so protocol or jus base on book.
u so lucky to find one. isit at Wee Care? i call them they charge from 65-85/hr depend one seniority of the therapist

tat the problem, $$$. few times a week therapies u know. hiazDon't guess or assume.. give each resource/support a chance. The low teacher:student ratio in a Montessori setting is helpful in helping special needs children slowly adjust to mainstream setting but yet the children can work at their comfortable pace. As long as your boy is not the extremely disruptive kind with frequent meltdowns, it shouldn't be a problem. Not all children with special needs have extreme behavioral issues.
I've successfully supported a mom with a mild downs syndrome child to read cos the mom is positive and believes very very much that her daughter can fit in and adapt to mainstream formal education for primary level. We worked hand in hand together... three to four times a week with me at the centre coupled with home reinforcement (i guided the mom as well..) plus daily classes at Rainbow... the girl sat for a simple test of some sort plus submission of medical papers and endorsement from other teachers, she made it. -
Helplessmum, I agree that most of the Kkh therapy is actually am assessment. Though not helpful but u still need to go since u hv no private alternative.
I stop weecare for him as I feel his progress there is a bit stagnant and I need new methods to teach him. I bring him to leapfrog, one hr $110. No more money for myself.
Chibi, I really admire your energy. I hope I can be like u when my boy goes P1 and my biggest wish is for him to survive mainstream. I think this is the biggest wish fir all mummies here. -

u know what i mean?
Ytd i talk to my hub about pri school for my son, he say he already prepare himself, if he din mke it
btw, did you compare dynamics? -
hi doubleE, whats EIPIC? no, the doc @ kkh refer my son to HPB for speech therapy.
helplessmum-yes, i brought my son to kkh child development dept.
yesterday i found out from a teacher that my son was bullied in school, thats why he started screaming & crying these 2weeks. the teacher said she has already seperate away the ones who bully my son but now my son has another behaviour problem, those kids whom he dislike, sit beside him, he will scream in anger, even some kid who just accidently touch him, he also scream in anger. i already corrected him, told him he cannot always scream when he is angry. haiz... :frustrated:
