Travel: China - Hong Kong

Hi all,
Thank you for sharing… yes if I am travelling myself, I wouldn’t mind paying more for a full fledged airline… but my sister and her boyfriend are with us so I need to be sensitive with the cost… Now jetstar is offering about $280 to HKG, and the CX is $480… I am so tempted to just buy jetstar because the difference is $200/pax! Any advice?! -
Btw, we have actually booked with this hostel called Hop Inn @ Carnarvon… read a lot of good reviews about the place. Its relatively cheap because it’s not a hotel… this is going to be my 1st time staying like a backpacker, heheheh
Has anyone stay there before?? -
And I will also like to ask whether I should plan to go shenzhen or Zhuhai?? Do I have to start a new thread or can continue in this HKG thread?

For us the diff was about $1.2k for jetstar vs sq. There was a Cathay promo then and it would have been $400 more for the family but the flight out was at 7+am. Way too early for the kids. Hence decided to fly jetstar eventually. The money saved from not flying sq could cover about 80% of our hotel stay. So I find it worthwhile. In any case it wasn't an unpleasant experience and I wouldn't mind flying jetstar again for future trips, if it's cheap enough

Yes, there are 5 of us so we pay $1k more for the flight if we go by CX... but i have read that jetstar is pron to flight delays and the leg room is really tight... weighing all the factors hoping to decide. Actually I can wait for the CX or SQ promo... because our intended dates are 3 months away so there's a good chance there will be more promo coming but my sister is KS... she keeps saying that we will be doomed if no promo!! -
I bought my tix about 2 months before planned travel date. About 1 or 2 weeks later the price started to go up progressively. Eventually it was about the same as sq. I guess you can still wait but try to book early to secure the lower price.

please don’t pin your hope on promo fares for travel during the school holiday period
their fare increase / end of promo is always on the first day of the school holiday, without fail.
but if you are booking the tickets later, rest assured that even the budget airlines will increase their fare in tandem, it won’t be as cheap as you see now
my advice is if your travel dates are somewhat quite confirmed, book the full service airline fast (cheap), and you can usually change date when closer to it in case / if the need arises … a few weeks before the holiday starts will be quite certain of travel dates already. by then the promo fares are surely over but the tickets conditions may allow for date change - full service airlines normally allow free of charge, not the same for budget airlines…every change cost money
however, always check and understand the T&C for the fare you are paying for
for those full service airlines, they are more accommodating for date / flight change especially if it is due to their fault / delay -

Appreciate your reminders and sharing... Lucky thing is we are not travelling to HKG during school holidays... am hoping to get some info/feedbacks from those who have travelled to HKG by tiger, jetstar and the full fledged airlines to have a better idea so that we can decide whether is it worthwhile to wait or pay more for the air tickets.please don't pin your hope on promo fares for travel during the school holiday period

Yes our dates are confirmed. In fact have booked accomodation.. now just the air tickets... hence most likely will not be changing the dates. Now the dilemma is jetstar is more than $200 cheaper than the CX or SQ... should we wait for CX/SQ promo or go ahead to book with jetstar.. we are willing to pay about $100/pax for CX/SQ flights to HKG but err... $200/pax more like abit not justifiable... -
if you have a big group, the savings is not small, can pay for many meals at those ‘must eat’ places … lol
