$680M may be spent mainly on enrichment and not tuition.

I guess we need to clarify that the \"undesirable\" element is excessive enrichment and unnecessary tuition to be the top few..

\"Tuition\" as in additional help for the needy student is not an issue.. how to differentiate these 2 is a tricky issue.. but don't be mistaken that many are against all kinds of tuition all and out..

I just feel that some regulation might help..

and identity the problem area and those needy student should still get their required assistance in some way.. maybe, the school can give tuition..

I'm under the impression that schools do help students who are weak in certain subjects. Teachers get the students who need help the most to stay back for remedial lessons or other learning support progs - both at primary and secondary level.

Ultimately we have to agree that some of the suggestions given about regulations of tuition come from the desire to make our education system more \"palatable\" for all and nobody will be disadvantaged just because they cannot afford good tutors.

Pls understand our intentions are good. :boogie:

Children depend on tuition cos they never learn to study on their own. IMHO, it's fine for primary school children to have tuition but for secondary sch children, they should have learnt how to study on their own. Perhaps the teachers should have taught them how to get materials and information on their own. Strangely, nobody mentioned JC students. I know that they are also taking tuition. It's fine if you are really weak in the subject but when you are in sec 3 (referring to the article) and consistently in the top, why tuition? Firstly, if you are weak in the subject, then don't choose it for O level. Simple. If you have passion for that subject, you will definitely ace it without tuition.

For example, I know of kiasu parents who insist that their children take triple science. Is there a need? Obviously not, to me is a matter of face. To haolian that their children are soooo intelligent that they are able to offer TS. DS3 didn't want to do TS as he hates Bio and there's no way to force him to study something that he's no passion for. (He took Literature against everybody's opinion that it's very difficult to score A and Literature is not popular. Well, he has been scoring A for it and enjoying himself.) He thinks that those who offer TS but not strong in the subjects are just being dumb cos they are stretching and stressing themselves. My niece did TS but is now an auditor. She will advocate against taking TS if the child is not up to it, period.
Same goes for those doing HCL. Is there any difference? Parents may argue that offering HCL will translate into 2 bonus points. In the end, if your child's overall score is not good enough for SAP sch, that 2 points amount to nothing but cost you tonnes of tuition fees.
If you are so strong that you are top most of the time (imagine being second means tuition again  typical kiasu) and still needs tuition only means that you have artificially enhanced intelligence and won't go far in future. Without float, you can't swim. Is there tuition for working adults? No wonder there are complaints in the corporate world that graduates have degrees but no aptitude. There are PSLE holders who are successful businessmen and have graduates working from them. What does this tell you?
Sorry for the :stompfeet:  but some parents don't seem to wake up. :siam:

I had 10 pupils in a particular class who requested for 1 to 1 oral practice, on top of the daily practice they were getting weeks before the exam :faint: That is only one of the four graduating classes I was teaching.

What did I do? Of course I acceded to their request lah. That is also on top of all other 'extra-curricular' (not pertaining to teaching) activities I HAD to be involved in šŸ˜“ šŸ˜“

Its no wonder I suffered from multiple miscarriages then, and blissfully managed to carry to term after I left the service.

Kudos to you and your son for taking the road less travelled :salute:

This reminds of streaming period when I was teaching. Ultimately, many of my better pupils who had the intention to do Pure Lit with 2 Sciences were always poached by the Science department to do TS (no Lit) and they do succumb to the pressure eventually because of the false notion that TS is much better in terms of future prospects

I cannot comment on whether they were able to cope or not as I did not follow up.

I can see your points and they have its value in speaking for people without the voice, we just need better data points to flag out the root of the issue clearly.

As for excessive enrichment, that is beyond anyone's control, every parent should first take note of their child's MENTAL and PHYSICAL HEALTH if these enrichment are only WANTS. I do not think MOE can change parents' mindset and they are supposed to be the best care for their own children. Unless it becomes a child abuse case, little the policy makers can do.

I believe this happens more easily for the secondary school kids. Primary school kids have varying maturity. From what I hear of our school, the teachers are always hopping in and out of the classroom for lessons. Staff room is a sacred place no one can go except monitors and only with permission. So we cannot assume all schools have the same practices of easy access to teachers.
