      Busymom:

I do not think that some forummers here lack empathy per se. It is perhaps the constant \"attacking\" by some on MOE and teachers over multiple threads in this forum over the last few months that caused some wanting to speak up and present an alternative view to balance things up a bit. Perhaps it has come across as being snobbish at times.
      Busymom:
And if I may raise my white flag first: I did say that there are areas that MOE can improve… just don’t keep blaming MOE for every single woe in our society. It makes people like me who is sitting on the fence feel a need to add some balance to some of the arguments.
It does come across like some crossover project 🦆 when the rants about teachers not teaching, et al start to duplicate each other across threads. 😉

The sian-ess for me (oops... :imsorry: am i allowed to use the \"s**n\" word here? 😉) edit: the weariness for me was reading the repeated rants that teachers don't teach... schools are not doing enough... schools are doing too much... Haha. Parents are so hard to please :censored:

Granted not all teachers are good, nurturing, committed. My girls do face their fair share of gems and duds for teachers. In fact, currently facing a headache with one of their teachers now. But I digress. Then again, for every dud we come across, 9 other teachers are precious gems.

I, too, wish that we have a panacea to the education industry woes and ills. In the meantime, I don't see the teacher or the school as the enemy. What good will that do for my kids? I treat the teachers as partners in nurturing and developing my girls. And I tell the teachers that. We are partners in helping our children grow better. Seems to work well so far. 🙏 :xedfingers:

Of course, there are some over-zealous parents out there... must be 1st in class/level or else, must be the best of the best or else.... and the latest one, blaming one's own parents for putting them in the \"wrong\" primary school as that affects his own child's current p1 registration now..

For a second, I thought you are reading my thoughts - but alas, what I'm going to comment on is Asian-ess! 😆

I mean, this thread is highlighting on the fact that is is something happening in Asia, isn't it? So gripe about it all being MOE's fault seems untrue, is it not? At the end of the article, it is said,

The study called for state supervision and regulation of the industry, as well as a review of Asia's educational systems.
\"They should ask why it (tutoring) exists in the first place, and what can be done in the mainstream to make supplementary tutoring less desirable and necessary.\"

So what is common in Asia that is resulting in this phenomenon? What is common amongst the various education system in asia? The extent which children are being tested? The number of children per class?

Or could it be other common demographic trends such as the increase in wealth, less children (more resources channeled onto each child) etc., ?

under stress, some kids throw tantrums when they don’t really meant 100% what they sounded.

under stress, some adults also throw tantrums when they don’t really meant 100% what they sounded.

                  let’s give them a break.

\"12 Jul – According to insiders, Andy is likely to send his daughter to a primary school in Malaysia and continue her further education in Singapore. Andy gave a thumbs-up to the Singaporean education system as he believed the system is perfect, insiders said.\"

Human expectation/desire is a tricky thing, that's why must always try to have some balance and be able let go. When we push and the child achieve it, what happens next? Expectation goes up, push further.....all these FULL Potential thingy. Good to stretch a bit.....but must know when to stop.

besides contentment which is a godly virtue, there is also a peer pressure to keep up

yes must know where is the limit and when to stop and smell the roses

rising expectation could be a scary thing

I apologise for splitting hairs a little here:
I think there's a difference between feeling contented for living the ultimate blessed and blissful life including a home to be proud of, a nice car to drive , a supportive spouse and good, clever and intelligent children VS contentment when life is in a mess.

I agree contentment is indeed a godly virtue especially so if we declare happiness even when life is in a mess and the odds are highly stacked against u, but i think a large majority of vocal writers here lean more towards the former. Not sure if we qualify to give ourselves a pat on the back when we feel happy with life and consider that as virtuous. Grateful maybe? If we have arrived and are grateful for it, is it right to tell those that havent to just be contented? Life's not fair? Build resilience. Dont think that will go down so well if we find ourselves on the other side. My own opinion.

Indeed, reacting to rising expectations. U see, it is tricky because even if u are contented, as I'm sure the Forest people and aborigines were, other less contented humans became greedier, lazier and hungrier for new inventions and advancement, and progressed toward city life. One does wonder on looking back if the virtue was for the better or for the worse. We may openly marvel at how amazing it must be for these people to have sustained themselves on so little, with no desire or expectation to move ahead (contentment), whilst others moved so far ahead.in secret, I'm sure we would wonder what they must have been thinking to stick to their course.

                        Just my own musing.
