Tiggermum, thank you so much for taking time to pen your thought. Just want you to know that I really appreciate your help in this.

Most of the comments I heard are only very surface and nobody tells me what they think NUSH lack in or how do we know if our kids are suitable. The one most common feedback i get is the kid must like & must be strong in Math & Science. I personally think that is not sufficient enough to decide if a school is suitable or not for our kids.
Your feedback on school culture, parent/child's expectation, improvement needed & child's character really help me a lot. I am now more comfortable & confident to give my DS the proper guidance when the time comes. :thankyou:

Sometime it is the student themselves who find the culture or competition or environment not matching their personal expectations.

Just to share that 2 of my DD ex-GEP classmates in RGS have decided to opt out after year 1. Nothing is perfect. May be they should have chosen NUSH like my DD to beef up the girl no, and NUSH could have been perfect for them. :?

Agree. Just not looking at the bright+ve side alone if kids and parents look at the -ve side also and then decide most of the these problems will be solved.

I have the other way the kid (My DS senior in primary school) is in NUSH now , the subject difficulty level and level of knowledge her classmates have and environment makes her feel down, she sometimes feels inferior and thinks she is not to level of others (the main reason she was always above her peers in the primary school and she couldnt here). Her Parents assumed she was strong in the subject based on the acadamic results above 90 in maths / science and got her to NUSH. She shared her experience to my DS and classmates so that kids dont any how choose schools. Her sharing helped my DS a lot.

I know NUSH doesn’t suit my DS as he is stronger in humanities although he is also good at Math/Science. So as parents, we have to be realistic and help our children choose the right school that will really help nurture and maximize their full potential. Afterall, we want our children to be happy in their quest for learning.

Anyway my relative who was mentor for NUSH assured me that the school’s programme does not suit my DS at all…so I have no qualms on leaving the school out of our selection list.

                      Hi GLMLJLK,

I will..if the school is just NUS High (minus the 'of Math and Science') ! DD2 needs a lot of guidance in Math & Science, so i don't think she's suitable.

I actually quite like the NUSH model, which gives kids a chance to break out of the rat-race mode. DD now learns in order to understand, not just to tackle the exams. She is well-rested during the holidays too, unlike her ex-classmates in top IP schools, who have a lot of projects and work to do. (but then again, it could be that she's still enjoying her honeymoon period at year1).

Some stuff that they are doing at year 1 are quite interesting. In Chemical Potpourri, they learn about chemistry in food. And in one elective module this semester, they'll be learning about the use of medicine during the course of history, from ancient Egypt to modern times. They've also been on field trips to IKEA (to learn about innovation) and the Aeromedical Centre to learn about physiological challenges of flying.

The kids at NUSH are also quite a quirky bunch, the boys in DD's class are so crazy about chess, they play at every available opportunity. Academically, the rivalry is friendly and not stifling, and those who are knowledgable are generally quietly confident and not showy.

Seems like quite a good place to be in.....for those with real interest in Maths & Science. But if only interest in Maths but so-so for Science......would you recommend?
