Even for tingxie, the grade in included in the overall assessment, the teacher will revise with the students, the one I know lah, not sure if itโ€™s for all the classess, so as long as the student pay attention, will be able to pass tingxie without parentsโ€™ help.

        Mine are graded.

Also graded? Then I'll have to add again, unfair leh :nunchuk:

HAHAHA. Will it make you feel less unfair if I commented that from what I can gather, the teachers try to help all to pass. That's why teacher will let some students practise more.
Orh..you're being bad. You truncated my post. Tsk tsk... ๐Ÿ˜†

ok, you probably didn't realise I added that in when I read through your earlier post again and decided your DD has very dedicated teachers. ๐Ÿ˜„

If this is the intend, I would appreciate if the school give a sample report instead of leaving parents shocked or puzzled????

          ๐Ÿ˜‚
So it all boils down to what you thought the school expected out of the kid? Before you became shocked or puzzled, was your kid stressed or lost over this assignment?

          Totally \"lost\".

Stared at the paper.. blank look.

I asked, \"Didn't the teacher explain to you how to do, how to start, what to write?\"

          \"Blank look\".
For me, this scene has been played out frequently and normally, the parents will sms each other to reach a consensus of what the teacher really wants.

This thread seems like a prologue of the other thread.

Chance upon this thread only today. And because I read this today (not any earlier), I believe my child would be able to do it when he is in primary one. If I read thus earlier, I would Have been so shocked that the standard of primary one has been so high these daysโ€ฆ

Yesterday I happened to do a review with one of my childโ€™s teachers. She showed me a recent piece of written work by my child. I almost flipped off the chair. My child, together with the rest of the class, was made to write their thoughts after a recent excursion to the eggs farm. After the write up, the selected children are supposed to do a show (drawing) and tell ( based on the written assignment).

Needless to say, the purpose of the review was to tell me - my child "cannot make it". But guess what? My child is only four!!! It was not a bashing session, just to remind me to get my child to practice writing more often. But I also flipped becauseโ€ฆ Eh come on, my child is only four!

So if this type of training continues, I am quite sure my child can do this assignment when he is in pri 1.
If a student is not guided in class or simply don't understand the wordy instructions and the parents too busy/ not highly educated enough to comprehend the bombastic words, then he/she will underperform in front of his/her privileged classmates who can put in a \"professionally-guided\" piece of work. Bottomline is whether they are guided in school.

                    I agree.

Say, the posted sample is a \"Show and Tell\".

If the kid without any external help produces a blank page.. I wonder how he/she will be graded for \"Show and Tell\"..

Yeah.. My kids stare at the paper and wrote nothing.. if I did nothing..

How about those families who are unable to do anything.. (Not English educated etc..)?

                    Ah...... tuition.. anyone?

There are BASC. From the various sharing of mummies who send their kids to BASC, I learned that the teachers will revise work with the kids and even ask them to buy assessment books that the teachers will go through with them too. Though for s&t, I'm not sure if BASC helps in this.
sorry.. what is BASC?

If they're not graded, then I think it's not a big issue to me. Whether they're able to do a decent show-n-tell or not, the teacher will be there to guide them and help the weaker ones (with ref to SAHM_TAN's post). There'll be some that are better, others not so. Anyway, it's just an exposure for the kids to learn \"presentation\" in front of an audience.

Hope I got the right picture about this assignment. :xedfingers:
Then, maybe, the article could be a simple write-up where the kid just need to demonstrate the presentation skills instead of having to produce the article themselves?

like I said, if the kid produced a blank page, how to even conduct the S&T?
