For Q8 - Yes, a verb in the original form (infinitive without \"to\") should be used in this case.

In the structure \"see sb...\", two verb forms may be used: 1. see sb do, 2. see sb doing.

The difference between the two is that the former indicates that the person sees the fact or the process of the action; whereas the latter conveys the idea that when the person sees the action, the action is \"happening\".

      Hi,

My understanding is different. (I am just a mother coaching my own P6 girl)

For Question 8, my understanding is that the second verb is an infinitive verb, hence should be the root form. (e.g. I heard her cry ... , He felt it move , She saw him fall ...)

For Question 11, my understanding is that for \"neither\", we have to look at the noun nearer the verb, so
\"Neither the men nor the captain is ...\" - cos captain singular
\"Neither the captain nor the men are ...\" - cos men plural ..

Any expert, pls advise. Thanks a lot!

      Regards.

[quote=\"Dazzle\"]From Rosyth Prelim 2011. Will someone help to answer my queries regarding the answers?

Q8 Janet was certain that she saw Matt ____________ her purse.
      (1) take
      (2) took
      (3) takes
      (4) has taken
Ans: (1), why isn't it (2)? The sentence is in past tense, shouldn't all verbs be in past tense?
the action 'take' happened in the past but Janet is recalling the event, so we use present for her 'recall.
Q11, Neither the captain nor his men ________ attending the function this evening.
      (1) is
      (2) are
      (3) was
      (4) were
Ans: (2), why isn't it (1)? Neither means none, so should be singular verb, right?
when using neither/either, there are two nouns in eqn. Use plural when one or more is plural and singular only when both are singular.

Just wanted to add something… for neither nor, if one noun is plural you must put it last… so the only case for which singular is possible is when both are singular… hope the clarification helps

Anybody knows if the item "Fill in each blank with a suitable word" (with no choices provided) has been tested in the past few years? I saw this in the specimen paper in the 5 year seriers published by EPH, but I failed to find this component in the previous years’ questions listed in the book.
