So, who is doing the shipping......
The Singapore government is very good at telling people that the system is such that it has to be this way...\"is not our fault!\", \"is the global trend\". But who chose and perfect the system to its pinnacle...

        I just learn something new.

Remember that the gov imposes an extra stamp duty to foreigners that buy a property in Singapore? is suppose to cool down the property market.

But no! Since, we have signed free-trade agreements with many countries (China, India, USA, Canada, Great Britain etc…), these foreigners can buy local properties and pay stamp duty rate as if they are citizens.

No wonder, the new policies didn’t have much impact.

I thot the message to us goes along the line ---- stay together, elders prefer to be taken care of till the last day at home etc? It's really not easy to take care of them ourselves & even when there's help, it can still get very very frustrating/stressful. I can understand why we would chose to 'ship' them to nursing home.... be it to local or JB. But push blame to govt, :?

For heaven's sake, do your homework lah!

            http://www.97711818.myweb.sg/mw-property-news/2012/7/33534/more-absd-exempt-foreigners-bought-singapore-homes

Residential property purchases made by foreigners from countries exempted from ABSD (additional buyer’s stamp duty) rose in 1H2012, according to data released by CBRE.

These foreign buyers, including permanent residents (PRs), hail from the US, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Norway – countries that have free trade agreements with Singapore.

CBRE noted that the group accounted for 3.1 percent of all homes purchased by non-Singaporeans during the period, more than the two and 2.6 percent seen in 1H2011 and 1H2010 respectively.

            Sheesh!

You really have no objectivity left.

Is in the news, some homes, even commercial one are closing down because the price to renew the land is simply too high.

Oh yah...bookshops are closing down also..kintergardens are closing down...so maybe all activities should be classed as economic activities and those that don't generate that much profit as compare to others should be allowed to die and become obsolete by itself....that is one dimensional thinking that is going to crash our nation. It seems that current philosophy of our gov is that nothing else is more important than economic market force.

And your solution? Throw all the foreigners out of their posh Draycott and Aardmore condos, reclaim all the properties from Sentosa Cove, and turn them retirement villages?

The old folks will be extremely happy, I'm sure, as will I when I retire, but I doubt my kids would be if they are upkeeping the taxes or forgoing economic growth in order to sustain it.

Excuse me, according to this model, kids don't have a place. if your kids are just mediocre, they will be replaced by foreigners who can chalk up higher economic data for the government.

Buy are using guilty of using hyperbole? Who say that we are going to use sentosa clove for retirement village?

Look within ourselves first. Blame govt, that's what we do best.

According to your model, my kids, if they are mediocre, will be providing the lowly paid labour for the highly paid foreigners. They will still be paying taxes, directly or indirectly, and bearing the brunt of low economic growth.

Don't digress, how would you balance the competing needs of the young and the old? (don't shy now, this is faced by every graying society in the world, maybe it'll come out in your GP paper)
