mummies, happy to report that social stories seem to work ...


for the longest time dd3 has been playing her giant toy truck in a very noisy (sometimes to the extent of being irritating) fashion. so I tried my hand at putting up a social story for her, with pictures and simple sentences, on how playing the toy in that particular manner is noisy, what is the consequence of being noisy and what she can do to enjoy herself and at the same time not make it so noisy.

and it WORKS! while there are some instances that she still plays too noisily, these instances have greatly reduced. Better still, when she plays in a noisy manner, she will look at me to see my reaction, and when I give some prompts without verbalising, she is able to take the cue and cut back on her noise.

this has been ongoing for the past one week and I am so happy with the outcome! of course, the social story definitely needs some finetuning (my skills of writing social stories not there yet) and a lot of patience to repeat the story day after day is required, but I am celebrating that at least it is working out and I can work on this as a methodology to teach dd3 different things.

thanks to the mummies who have helped me with the understanding on social stories. Its really a step of achievement for both dd3 and myself!

I created it on white board and took a photo of it in my hp, so that I can refer back and blow up the specific sections where required.

It was meant to address the issue when her Ah Ma is watching TV and couldnt hear what was on TV, but I have started to extend it to other family members about how they feel when they cant hear whats on TV.

Its quite a humble story board ... :oops: but hope it helps.

Actually there are still information gaps in my story board if you look closely, and will work on them as I go along. But given that this is a first try and it is working, just want to share the joy of achievement where dd3 and myself are concerned, where I feel like celebrating ... :celebrate:

Life shouldnt be a downward spiral into depression and gloom because of our children's condition, even though sometimes it does feel like it. while it is not an occasion for a durian ice cream for me schweppes I do value this moment ...

Actually you did very well already. I remember I did one for my boy to prepare him for the trip to HK disneyland. He still ended up having major meltdown inside the park. After the super tiring trip, I discussed with his therapist on why it didn't work, then we realized I touch on everything from taking bus to the park, buying ticket and entering the park, but I failed to describe in details what to expect inside the park, I only generalize as take the rides, so he was nervous for not knowing what to expect. :wrongmove:
