Asia spending billions on tutors: study

Itβs my aim, let see how how long I can hold out for the other subjects

It's better for them, IMHO, to be in school doing 'things' with their friends than watching t.v. or playing computer games at home. I know DS3 will go to Parkway with his friends once a while to rewind. They usually have a meal at a fast food chain and window shop before going back to school for 2nd round.janet_lee88:
Neighbour's son has one day school ends at 1230, but he has CCA till 6 or 7 pm. Cousin's son is hardly home before 4 when he was in Sec 1. Practically no life in secondary school...very much worst. After a long day, homework still must completed before sleeping.
On the contrary, secondary school is FULL of life.. The child gets to meet so many new people, learn so many new things, handle so many new experiences.. How can it be ''no life''??
And, not home before 4 does not mean ''no life''.. It simply means that life has extended beyond the 'home', for the child...
DS3 is very against tuition cos he finds that most of his friends are only exam smart and only know what are taught in school. In his own words, they need to spend hours reading over and over again the textbooks to understand certain concepts while he only needs to read once. He's used to process information on his own but he really hate studying. He thinks that's the difference between an independent learner like him who has never have had tuition and one has tuition since primary school. (No offence to those in different camp, just wish that you can relax a bit on the tuition part).
I strongly recommend that you be less uptight about your children's education, no need to get all As. Some subjects can pass can already. Unless you want your child to be Mozart or Vinci, just let school be a learning process and let the children have fun learning. Maybe, life will be much happier then. Honestly, I've yet to see any paintings done in school from my 3 DSs. :skeptical:  I don't believe in making them get As for all subjects though I do hope they do.

:yikes: :faint:
But are the above ALL CORE subjects which are needed for the computation of their academic results ?
usually only subj 1-7 are the core subj, the rest though examinable subj, but not included in the computation.
u prompted me to take a look at my gal's yr 1 photocopies, yes, the non-core subj are in a whole long list..... :faint:
besides subj 1-7 which are needed for their computation of GPA, they have
RS (research studies)
9) ACC (appreciation of chinese culture)
10) CME (moral education)

12) Conversational Malay ( haha, after this course, she still cant speak malay)

Hi Augmum,
Dont the pupils need to stay bk for their core cca on friday's afternoon?Augmum:
that is worse than RI year 2's time table : tuesday dismisses at 13:50 and Friday at 12:30. those without optional merit cca literally goes home at 12:30
Or how many times per wk for core cca?
My gal never gets bk so early even she was in Yr 1.
My DS (Sec-1) goes home at 12.30 on Fridays (except when he needs to stay back in school for group projects), as he does not take up any merit CCA. He stays back in/ goes to school twice a week for his core CCA (Wed & Sat).
So, apart from Tuesdays (3rd Lang) and Wednesdays (CCA) when DS comes home about 6+7+, he is home rather early (3+4+) on most days of the week (Friday being the earliest about 1+)..
thanks firefly for yr reply.
oic , so yr DS has to go bk on Sat for his CCA instead of staying bk on Fri.
Yes, yr 1 still considered as \"honeymoon period\" so tell yr DS to enjoy as much as he can.....

Independent learning is the way (or a better way) to survive in sec and beyond schs....(tuition comes in only when is :imdrowning: )
that's why most sec schs' environment are encourgaging independent learning..... -

:yikes: :faint:
some schools using Lit as EL, renamed the combined subject English Language Art, using the standard lit text
history and geog are not concurrent for lower sec, semester 1/2 for either one
D&T and F&B are also alternating between semester 1/2
some schools also have Philosophy (examinable), research education, CLE (character and leadership education)etc
those gradable for GPA are only 6 : ELA, MT, MA, SC, History & Geog -

Yes, the subjects in the above list are considered all core subjects. It includes in the computing of the overall score and if one is at Sec 2, it will affect the streaming for Sec 3. Guess, school wants to emphasize that the arts and life skills are just as important as the sciences.
The school does rotate Art, F&N and D&T amongst the 4 terms. So, for these 3 subjects, not all at the same time.
As for CCA, my advice to my girls is to choose a CCA that they are interested and passionate about. At least, they will pick up a skill and enjoy doing it. I did not want to tell them to pick the \"easiest\" or less demanding CCA. Dont want to give them the impression that we shd take the easy way out in life.
It's really all about self-discipline and time management in sec sch -

looks a lot, but the variety adds to the fun and open their mind to education as more than merely math & sci and EL & MT ..... they sure have more fun intellectually
