6 months' paid leave for mum?

I think increasing the maternity leave will not solve the low birth rate problem.

In fact, it may put females at a disadvantage, especially when employers consider lack of manpower for half year…

IMHO, it is the rising cost of living; the diapers, expensive formula milk, preschool, etc.
Not to mention, who will help to take care of the baby?
Babysitter market rate these days at least $700 and if use maid, you’ll need someone extra to make sure the maid doesn’t abuse baby.
And not everyone prefers infantcare centres where there is 1 caregiver for every 5 babies…

So many things to consider, having more maternity leave is just tip of the iceberg.
Even then, it may not help but may actually hinder.

Not so easy to increase birth rate lah. If so easy, all those countries that experienced the problems before us would have solved it by now. But since govt is looking into ways and means, good opportunity to look into better benefits right? But be realistic lah. Cos whatever we ask for, at the end of the day, sure will have some trade off somewhere.

So kids sick then how? No more leave to cover except take own annual leave? When my kid sick, usually at least 1 whole week MC from school.

Come on. You have the childcare leave of 6 days each, that is 12 days a year for both parents. If have to take annual leave take lah. That is what your annual leave is for, to be taken when necessary, be it for leisure or for other matters. During our parents' time where got childcare leave. And as the child grows, they usually fall sick lesser and recover faster.

Solutions like free childcare, free edu, free medi? Yup all possible, very possible. But don't cry father cry mother when taxes increase across the board.

I can't help feeling sorry for the employers even tho I am not one. I just empathize with them. I imagine if my staff were to go on leave for 6 months, or worse, a few of them at one time, or if not, one after another.... :slapshead:


Increasing paternality leave is a good idea, so is the need for companies to start implementing flex hours and make work-from-home arrangements with employees (now with internet it is so much more easier and practical).

E.g. I see Guardian Pharmacy using computer and e-cam to communicate with the Pharmacists.

Livestyle has got to change with technology, and there is no better time than now.

Perhaps grants or tax relief can be given to companies willing to take on work-from-home arrangmemts with employees.

Was pretty disappointed with this "6mths paid leave?" as a way to encourage birth rate. Was wondering if NTUC has conducted any form of survey/interviews with grps of SAHM, working mums etc, big families small families etc to REALLY REALLY find out what we really want??


I read many of the posts here with interests and likes.

I also wonder what Singapore wants: Productivity at work and Fertility?? they both dun really work hand in hand. How to be productivity at work whn one is away from work 6 mths? 6 mths is a long time.

6mths that is half a year. How can a company wait for their perm staff to return after 6mths?? How to cont production if this valued staff is away? If employ temp staff to cover duty, and if temp staff can do the perm staff work well why should the employers take back the perm staff who may be well adjusted being home having great bonding time with child and hmm…may not want to return back to work aft that 6mths.

They give other benefit instead of longer maternity leave. What make us don’t dare to give birth is $$$$. From infant,children care,tuition all need $! Tuition is not necessary but if wanted to give birth of course we must provide them with the best! Pls work on it rather than maternity leave.
