My ds's teacher told the class that the percentage of GEPpers failed the baseline (70% for 4 subjects average) based on SA1 results this year:

The best GEP school - 2%
The worst GEP school - 17%. :yikes:

That's quite a lot. I expected only a handful to follow below the baseline.

Yes, 17% is quite high. Each gep school has only 40+ to 100+ gep students, so just a small number could push the percentage up. There is only 1 school higher than 10%, so the overall may be less than 5%.

17% is just too high. It means about 8 students, say,in 2 classes of total 48 students. Wonder is it because of the teachers or students’ probems tt lead to such high 17% of students not able to achieve the baseline. Hope the GE branch is monitoring the GE schools.

I am sure the GE branch is monitoring the progress. Otherwise, there won't be such statistics.

Assuming there are 400 GEP students (ie not every one of the 550 who were offered took up GEP), 5% = 20 students. And these are P6 students. There's a likelihood that these students will not do well in PSLE.

I am more concerned over the huge difference in the percent between the 2 schools.

Sorry to interrupt about statistics here. If a school has a small intake, say 1 class of 25 is 4-5 kids. If a school has 4 classes, say 100 kids, 2% is 2 kids.
So between 5 kids and 2 kids is only 3 kids difference, is it so alarming? :?

Is there any GEP school with only one class. I dont think so. So it is a difference of maybe 2 kids and 8-10 kids.

So the difference of 6-8 kids not so daunting right? :? compared to 2% and 17%.

70% is the basemark. It is a big concern to me if my child cannot even achieve the basemark. My next question will then be is my child suitable to be in the GE program? Would it be better if he stays in the mainstream?

I would expect across all GE centres to have around only 3 students to score less than 70%, expecially so for the P6 as they will be very used to the GE exam by then.
I also wonder what help is given to these students who did not clear the basemark.

Could these children be those who attend \"special GEP prep course\" to get into GEP but cant cope?

Honestly, my dd was very lazy, she is the type that wont do more than what was given as homework to get by. Day dreamer, forgot to do/hand-in hmwk, etc. She scored >80% in her GEP mid year last year. Considering she is a potato, cant really speak mandarin (should not score too high for MT oral & compo), not a bad result
