      Helplessmum3:

He generally does not have interest with his peers but yet is aware of them. I’ve also seen him playing non-verbal games with his peers like throwing ball, simmon say type of game, board games etc. He doesn’t initiate play.

We are under subsidized with NUH. We opened a case with them since my son was 2.5 years old. So, quite fortunate. Actually, the waiting time wasn’t very long. But we are considering going private however, we have to wait for the report to see which areas he need help.

Fleeting eye contact means he looks at people in the eye for a second and looks away and back.

      When was your son diagnose?

Mashy: oh I see. Hmmm, I won’t say my son is obsessed with a topic, he has preferred interests. Yup, I’ve also told a few of my friends. They also went ‘NO LAH!’. But after telling them it’s possible, I feel they show more attention & love towards my son. So that’s comforting to know. The good thing is my son doesn’t behave oddly just socially awkward I.e unable to express himself very well.

Gifts from heaven: I’m no expert but recently I’ve known a few places that provide therapy or intervention. They are, Leapfrog, polliwogs, Royce gym. May I know your child’s symptoms? Sorry, just very curious cause I’m eager to know where my boy stand.

        Hi,

I've been lurking here for a while. DS, who is 5+ yrs, has been recently diagnosed with Aspergers' Syndrome. Would like to know if anyone here could recommend a centre that conducts social skills playgroup.

        Thanks.

Centres like Weecare, Kaleidoscope and Dynamics offer social skills programs. I have not tried any of them though I have made some enquiries. I think you need to speak to their therapists to know whether their programs suit your child's specific needs.

            Hope this helps.

              My boy's symptoms:-
              1) Poor social skills with peers - He plays mostly on his own or alongside them. He is ok with family members.
              2) No/Limited functional play - He needs to be taught how to play things like cars, cooking sets, etc, and when at the playground, he just stares at the slides, climbing frames.
              3) Lacks empathy - just do things the way he likes with no consideration of others eg kicks me when he gets excited, crash down and land on his classmates when he is bored, beat or push his classmates when he wants to get ahead, disturbs the toys of other kids when they are playing (for reasons we still dun kn).
              4) Perfectionist
              5) Poor awareness of social cues/environment - challenge authority
              6) Temper tantrums n meltdowns which can turn aggressive - so v v difficult to discipline him
              7) Whines a lot - refuses to use speech to say what he wants, even though he can talk well
😎 High IQ - We found out in the assessmt
Apart fr the social aspects, he is ok. Basically, if u dun kn he has Aspergers, he would just come across as a spoilt brat (n me the permissive mum...hahaha!)

My boy attended social skill class at weecare, which he stopped end of last year because of busier schedule with him entering primary 1. They have 2 types of social class (if there isn't changes), 1) social skill class at Tanglin 2) kidz club held at everton park.
The difference is, for kidz club, you are suppose to bring a typical developing kid to be your special kid's buddy. My boy attended both (progress from social skill to kidz club).

How long were you with them?
How do you find their classes? Effective? For the topics covered, are they something which we can do at home on your own ?

thanks a lot![/quote]My boy was with them for social classes for a year.. The improvement he made was that he was no longer resistant in participating in group activity but they didn't manage to make him build the awareness or make him feel that he wants to join the group activity. It is only this year, when he is older, and I make him expose to 'real life' group setting like the mainstream school and afterschool care, then he starts to open up.

I felt that the group play, particularly the social skill classes are little bit too 'orchestrated' - I remembered I feed back to Weecare before, so not sure if they did anything to address on that already. My boy and other kids were held like 'rag dolly' when doing the tasks like turn taking ball fetching game. Once the game is over, you can see my boy and rest of the kids, repel off like like-pole magnet, ran off to different corners and back to their own world.
Not sure if this is good or bad, maybe it is a 'must go through' phase, as he eventually learn not to reject group activity.

My boy attended two terms. The effects are not obvious yet but like what Specialboymum mentioned, he no longer resist in group activity and through the lessons, managed to learn a bit about asking questions such as What’s this? What are you doing?

The social skills part as in playing peers and communicating with peers is still not there yet. I have pulled him out after 2 terms because I am starting him at Leapfrog for a one-to-one special ed therapy which includes social skills and speech. Leapfrog also has group sessions and once my boy is better at dealing wtih one-to-one, the therapist will recommend if he is ready to proceed to group.
