Mdm Koh:
Is the long man book for pure history or elective history? If so, are there any other books that are good elective history? THANKS
There is actually a pretty good History assessment book, which I use in my lessons and would recommend that all students buy, whether or not they intend to hire a tutor.meinteel:
Yes, there are history assessment and exam papers but they are pointless. History, unlike Maths or even English has no standard answers. Answer keys in these assessment are usually insufficient.
While difficult and more expensive, it makes more sense to hire a History tutor for your child. For one, they can mark the History essays & SBQs as well as explain to your child the many techniques.
What is the difference between narrating a point and elaborating & showing an example of a point? What is the difference between lifting a point and inferring from a point? How do I actually Elaboration, and evaluate a point?
It's a book by Longman and it's called Developing Skills for Modern World History by Lim Bee Ting. The reason for my recommendation is that the book teaches students how to answer SBQs and SEQs.
Many of my students told me that they have all the content, but when faced with exam questions, they don't know how to answer or where to start. Then they end up regurgitating all the info they learnt in class, which obviously, would not get them the marks.
The book is available at Popular, and last I checked, second-hand copies are also available at one of the stores selling old books at Bras Basah Complex.
Having said that, for students who are weaker in the subject (failing or getting only borderline passes), it's still better to get a tutor to guide them along, as the above forummer has said.
By the way, mods, this post is a positive review of a book, but don't delete ok? It's just an honest recommendation to parents based on my experience. Otherwise, the censorship policy is just :slapshead: I can let you check my IC. My name is not Lim Bee Ting. -

For group, is there any current group for Sec 2?TUITION FOR COMBINED HUMANITIES / GEOGRAPHY / HISTORY
Dear Student/Parent
Combined Humanities is a subject that is very skill-based and there are certain exam answering techniques that are not found in assessment books and textbooks. This explains why most students do not have issues with content, but they do face difficulty in answering application and skill-based questions (Source-based Questions).
We are a team of qualified and committed secondary school teachers specializing in English and Combined Humanities (Social Studies, Geography and History) and have taught batches of graduating students who have achieved distinctions.
Our teaching approach will be customized to students' learning needs and varied learning style. We will work with you to conquer the subject and do well for it. Some students are able to \"gain enlightenment\" after 1 month of intensive lessons on skill-based answering technique. Hence, academic support for Combined Humanities need not be a long term commitment.
Our teaching approach will be customized to the student’s learning needs and varied learning style. We will work with you to conquer the subject and excel in it. For combined humanities, you will be taught by two experienced teachers, one specializing in Social Studies and the other for your elective subject (Geography / History). It is as simple as that; you will have 2 Tutors for the price of 1.
For students who are keen on a JC route for post-secondary education, it is essential to secure a good grade for English and Combined Humanities as it is part of the L1R5 requirement.
For students who are keen on a Poly route, English is a compulsory subject for L1B4 computation.

'O' LEVEL COMBINED HUMANITIES - SS/HIST
How do i improve on my SBQ? My teacher advises me to do SBQ's step-by-step, so that if I get one portion wrong - for example the purpose of the source, I will still got some marks for inference, tone, etc. However, by doing the SBQ step-by-step, I waste time & I ALWAYS can't finish my paper in time. I really need to attain an A1 grade for combined humanities, please help! -
Practice practice and practice.
Inference, tone and reliability should be second nature. There arent many types to choose from! -
what are disciplinary concepts?
