tks jitancat 4 ur information. Will b going to the open house to check it out. Really headache abt choosing sch. Btw, anyone can tell me more a Anderson S S & Catholic High? Tks in advance !!!
Hi
I saw a thread somewhere in this forum that there was a boy who could not get into HCI last year. He did very well with straight As in his current Sec one this year. HCI will be arranging for him, an entry test if he can be qualified into HCI sec two - or something like this. Not sure if I get this right ?
Thus, when you are in Hwa Chong's open house tomorrow, find time to check out if, really, this can be arranged ? An entry test for secondary two - for transfer, I think. If so, then just in case, if your son could not be accepted in December, there is another hope for him next year if he is really keen on Hwa Chong and if he works hard to get straight A's in sec one.
Hope it helps. -

Wow! :udawoman:For me, it's a lot and a lot of hard works on the my side.
My son was studying the Chinese subject and I was studying on how my son can study Chinese subject effectively in the shortest time, including how to interest him and how to provide him with the environment to study Chinese, so it was much more than what my son will be doing.
Thus I think ONLY the parent, who will understand the child most (must) , can do the job, not tuition teacher and not school teacher. And the parent must not give up at any time.
Also, I think, different methods will work on different child and different subjects and different time. So the parents will have to OBSERVE child reaction as it goes, keep revising your ways till the most effective ways, and most importantly, get FEEDBACK and DISCUSS with the child directly to find out the BEST WAY. And change as improvement shown .... cannot fixed on one method all the way as it will get stuck and the improvement stops.
For my son - in particular, he wants to participate and be interactive. :x He does not like to be \"ordered\" to do this assessment work or that, without knowing how the amount of work will help in his chinese, and in particular, to which part in his chinese. So I had to give these answers to him EACH time. And he wants me to estimate what marks he will get after his hard work EACH time.... and I had to give this answer too. :stupid:
I need to do a lot of analysis after each chinese test, tuition paper, assessment paper and my son knew that I worked very hard for his chinese. And after sometime, he trusted my judgement on each analysis and the estimated marks he will improved - so he work very hard, very willingly, and each time, he went to exam with an aim for improvement, marks estimated by me. So worked together ! :celebrate: :snuggles:
Assessments etc, 听写's etc all did not worked out for my son IF they were just \"throwing\" to him --- which happened in last 5 years. I threw threw threw ---> my son just did did did blindly, like a robot, ---> the answers were wrong wrong wrong, even with the same questions repeated. And I :stupid::stupid::stupid:
HOWEVER THE SAME THING, assessments etc, 听写's etc, tuitions added in the last year etc, they WILL help and a lot more if they were done with careful planning.
For one example, I did a detail study on his performance in past assessments, his school papers etc, his tuition papers. Decided to work on the 完成对话 (his score 4/10). I will need to tell him why we should work on this, how we should work on it and why he will succeed scoring with this etc etc improved by ? marks etc. For first whole night about 4 hours, we worked only on this portion, extracted out from assessments books, papers and sometimes repeat doing over and over again, also explain explain and still explain. Next night, again etc. Also, to choose passages, starts from easier ones and slowly move to difficult ones. ---- then suddenly at one time, he started to score 10/10 for a few times and it kicked off ! He started to maintain 10/10 for 完成对话... and he was scoring 10/10 most of the time later in his assessment, tuition paper, school paper etc even with the difficult ones. Till PSLE, I never need to work on 完成对话 any longer and he is still scoring 10/10 most of the time..... So our hardwork for this ---> improved 6 marks, as estimated/promised to him and he is very happy. And so on to next ....
Also, like the \".... 帮你把他的心给挖出来,拔光他的皮,把他砍成十块八块, 给你吃!“ it was said to him when cutting a fruit for him to eat after a meal .... it amused him very much and he wants to learn it to tell his friend the joke. But it is not manageable yet even getting \"A\" ..... so we still need to work on his chinese speaking..... carry on and never give up even if first attempt fails... and even if still failing....
Tuitions --- also moved from tuition A (2 months intensive, very very bad results ) to tuition B (6 months ) to tuition C (5 months)... BUT it was because my son informing me that its not helping or he could not improve anymore from there and the need to move on to better ones ..... And the tuition will not worked out well without my help, for my son. I need to monitor the tuition notes, the tuition lessons, tuitions assessment papers etc and I need to get feedback after every lesson from my son. NB : May not be same for every child, esp those who can be independent in learning for that subject.
Its too long already, very sorry, I tried to cut short as much as possible ..... above are good examples, I think. Hope it helps. -
See, I m really in a dilemma :? On one hand, hope he can get into HCI, on the other, worried that he cannot cope if he can (by luck) get in. I am trying to persuade him to choose Catholic High for the 2nd choice ,but somehow, he is not very keen. :?:

Sorry for my ignorance, but what's your son's aggregate? -
There cases someone get into RI and RGS with the t-score close to the cop or appeal, and cannot scope there. In the end, they transfer to other sch in sec.2. Think carefully and make the right choice for your kid.

Hi
Far & good school <----> Near & not so ideal school.
If I need to, I will choose far, good school for my son. About one hour to 1.5 hour traveling time one way, is acceptable to me/my son.
So maybe check out transport time first and judge again if acceptable to you and your son, traveling time. Minimum travelling time for any school will be around 20 to 30 mins, one way, unless within walking distance. So you may want to calculate the differences in timing, transport fees vs the quality of school to judge if it is all worth while to travel.
For studying, they will spend most time within the school and not traveling up and down many times in one day. During traveling, there is also good resting time in buses or MRTs. Further, Schools may \"move house\" too ... here 2 years and there 2 years, sometimes.
Hope it helps. -

Fully in agreement. My philisophy in life is that there are many many opportunities along the way of life. There are sure to be many obstacles and setbacks along the journey( baby year born kids will face the toughest in their choices of school at every milestoneHi to all ,
I did very well, usually top 3 in school, in my primary school days and even had a nickname \"mathematician\" as I was usually scoring full marks for maths. But somehow I did very very badly for PSLE, maybe due to stressed. :stupid: Our time, no T score. I went to Bukit Ho Swee Secondary School ....VERY VERY upset. I had wanted to go Crescent Girls' School very much and my dad had aimed for Raffles Girls' School.
I picked myself up and go for next dream school - JC/poly and next dream uni ..... many hiccups .... And finally, I graduated with a First Class Honors in our local Uni, NTU, EEE, the only regret is my father was already not around to see my convocation.
Thus, not to worry, if your dream secondary school could not be fulfilled now, quickly go on to next best sec school first --- then go on to work on dream JC and ---> dream Uni. And next ---> career. As life goes on, dreams go on for you .......
). The most important item we must pack on this long journey is our positive attitude without which we will always blame everyone, everything except ourselves for the injustice n failures.
So, wherever we are in, bring your POSITIVE ATTITUDE with you. Not the place that you have wanted to be in? Make it into the right place to be. :celebrate:
