Just happened to be reading this thread few days ago and would like to give my 2 cents worth..
The current system is indeed giving much priority to alumni. I am not proposing to scrap away the registration phase for alumni but will definitely appreciate if the authorities do something to fine-tune the current Phase 2 category.
(1)\tAgreed with parents who wanted their children to be in the school they have previously studied in, to share the same values and cultures. However, if parents think so highly about their alma mater, shouldn’t they joined the alumni association and active participate in the school activities even before their children enter the school? I can understand giving priority to alumni, especially those actively involved, but I truly don’t understand why should priority be given to those old boys and girls who refused to join the alumni association, not involved in any of the activities and not even in-touch with anything from their alma mater until their children need to register for P1. Then they’ll go for registration with their old report book or any documentations, which they have not touch for at least 2-3 decades, to prove they were previously from the school. Worse are those parents who only studied in the school for only 1-2 years, either transfer-in or out due to some reasons. IMHO, I think the authorities should do away with Phase 2A(2) and just have Phase 2A for alumni who actively involved in their alma mater.
(2)\tPhase 2A(1) & 2A(2) are given unlimited seats for application from the balance after Phase 1. Then the balance after Phase 2A(2) will be evenly apportion to Phase 2B (50%) & Phase 2C (50%). That means applicants under Phase 2A(1) & 2A(2) who are staying >10km away from the school will be given the seat against those staying within 500m but not under this Phase. Would this be fair for those staying near and yet not within reach due to limited seats? Why can’t the balance vacancies after Phase 1 be equally apportion to Phase 2A, 2B & 2C and the balance from Phase 2A will then be evenly allocate to 2B & 2C? That will definitely increase the chances for those staying within 1km or 2km especially when most people will probably fall under Phase 2C.

I am a FTWM and a coordinator of a PSG program.
Yes, most PSG programs are run during office hours, primarily because these programs are organized with the students' participation in mind. ie.run during school hour, or, sometimes after school.
The PSG is mindful that there are more FTWM like myself who are keen to participate in PSG programs. Sometimes, if the school request for it, we run post-exam activities that run for the whole morning session. Some FTWM and dads take half a day leave to participate in such programs. I, myself, go for programs that require my presence in school before I start work, or during my lunch break. And, as a coordinator, logistics work can be done after office hours
My fellow PSG coordinators and I work very hard to contact all parents who have signed up for the PSG. We often personally call up everyone on our list, sometimes we have to call several times if we fail to speak to the person. And we do this for every program we run throughout the whole year. We have on going programs throughout the year, like library and reading; post-exam enrichment programs, and special programs to encourage and support the P6s.
I enjoy being in the PSG, interacting with other mummies and daddies, often learning from them. I also enjoy interacting the the children, though facing a class of 40 can be very daunting. I hope that the children enjoy the activities our PSG organises for them, and derive some benefit from our programs. Although I am keenly aware that for me, time out of the office means a lower income at the end of the day, I am still glad to be actively involved in the PSG. -

if one has no time to join psg, be a class rep. get to know the form teacher, parents of the classmates.
it is less time consuming and lighter duties. -
Having been involved in both alumni and PSG, my experience is that alumni activities are organised in the evenings or on weekends while PSG activities are often held during school hours on weekdays. In the school where I am involved in, we have no problems getting PVs but the whole alumni are run by a small committee who are all working adults. We need more alumni to be involved. I am totally for the alumni phase to be modified to include active alumni only, even though I have benefitted from phase 2A many years ago as an inactive alumni then. But there will be an issue on what is deemed active. A prominent alumni who only attends one school event as a GOH annually may be deemed as active. Compare this to another alumni who spend time organising an alumni event on every Saturday (I know of one boys’ school at Bishan having weekly alumni activities).

Yup. Must seize the day, that kind of love is fleeting ... by the time they are teens ... they go like this when they see you in school :yikes: and then quickly :siam: ... but I am sure that's not the reaction of every teen.

Why dont we use the same criterion in 2B to measure the contribution the parents make? We can simply count the hours like PV in 2B. If you have done 40 hours of duty for the school the year before the p1 registration, then you can be counted as \"active\" alumni. I don't think it's fair to give more priority to alumni who only contribute a few hours over those who have done 40 hours of PV (some even 60 or 80 hours). How's that sound? -

since you already know it is inflated, why still bother? it is lousy except for the GEP transfer ...... why don't go to those non-GEP schools because they are good in producing GEP kids to be transferred out?
Now I really have to give you an 'F' in reading comprehension. This is not what they or I am saying here. But why so touchy?
What I am against is putting up half-baked results inflated by GEP students just to show the school in as good a light as possible. Either don't put them up at all, or put up separate lists/tables. This is not for the benefit of present parents, but parents who are deciding which schools to register their children in.verykiasu2010:

I think some people in their eagerness to prove a point or quote an example, mistaken between activities between PSG or parent volunteer versus alumni
