MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
wearefamily:
Because this phase benefits the MAJORITY of singaporean parents and Primary school entry is not based on merits.
Even if it discriminates against fellow Singaporeans that you think this is supposed to be helping? How many PR/Foreigners you think this excludes, on top of the already stringent criteria, versus the number of Singaporeans that are impacted? -
3Boys:
vks2010, we've been through this. Alumni priority can be allowed but needs to be capped and possibly selective, otherwise, there will come a time when no one else will ever have a chance to get into some schools. It'll become an old boys club, like the worst of the old imperial systems, and has no place in a society like ours.
therefore it is your view that only active alumni members should be accorded priority, and dormant alumni members are no different from anyone in phase 2Cverykiasu2010:
Does the alumni who contributed significantly and loves his Secondary School get priority admission for his child to that school? NO
Does the alumni who contributed significantly and loves his Junior College get priority admission for his child to that school? NO
Does the alumni who contributed significantly and loves his University get priority admission for his child to that school? NO
Does the alumni for a Primary school who cares not one whit for his primary school and lifts not one finger, except to fill the P1 registration form, get priority for that child to that school? YES
So, those who support alumni priority for PRIMARY school admissions, applied indiscriminately as is presently the case, tell me the logic of this policy again?
Level of engagement may be one yardstick, I understand it's a hornet's nest to even talk about implementing it, but I really find the present system intolerable.
I have no quibble that dormant alumni should be treated as non-alumni -

(1) Some alma maters do not exist anymore.
It's sad that some primary school do not exist anymore. I hope that MOE can look into linking them to existing primary schools. Schools like Swiss Cottage really have a heritage worth preserving. It's not my alma mater, but my brother went to that school, and he love it. It gave people who were borderline handicapped a place to study alongside the normal students. It gave children, SC, PRs and FTs a place to interact and play together. I would like to see the alma mater of schools like Swiss Cottage another primary school where they can pass on their heritage and traditions to. -

Come to think of it, if they had not disappeared...and still at the same site, then it would have solved the problem for those who could not get into SCGS and ACPS.pirate:

How true! It's just conveniently disguised under the pretext for more 'fairness'.vicki:
My thoughts.
They should completely do away with all phases and distances or should they?
> I keep hearing everyone say must be fair and stuff (either to those alumni/ volunteers/ within 2km etc) so if we should be completely fair, i believe we should just do away with all the phases and all go for balloting at their school of choice. Then its just luck whether you get in or not. If you think you are in a school that is 'too far' from your house, then just shift house lor - since it doesnt really seem like an issue to 'shift near the school of choice in the first place'.
> Any other methods to allocate schools other than the above is definitely not a 'fair' method - so depends on where you are positioned now - you will probably shout hurray or grumble (me included!)
And - i dont really buy the argument of 'i stay near a school and therefore i should have my birthright of getting in'.
It might not apply to all , but some parents 'purposely buy a house near a good school - cant get in - then complain/ grumble whatever - using this statement.'
I mean if you are really that concerned abt staying near the school - then just buy a house near a 'unpopular' school and send your kids there lor - bao get in one - BUT - are you willing?
So, back to my grumble - pple are grumbling cos things do not go in accordance with their plans - hence not abt the distance/ phases issue - but rather a 'popular school issue'. -

No. It's about the interest of my child. And I will throw stones, buy house nearby, and more, if I have to. :nunchuk:
