basically parents have been given all possible choices then. exercise alumni priority ? you have it. by distance ? you have it. depends on each one's circumstances ....... so why so many complaints ? by and large most people are okay with the various options available to suit their own needs.

don't think policy makers are being yo-yo, they just trying to please everyone to suit each one's own situation

it is the vocal minority clamoring for the limited places in branded / popular primary schools that create all these noise year after year and the mainstream press will go sensationalise it because they did get what they wanted

It only works if distance and alumni priority have the same weightage. As Phase 2A numbers are now significant in popular schools, then a rethink is in order. Its not the press sensationalising, I've been against this for at least 4 years already.

that is why a popular school is popular - alumni wants it, non-alumni also wants it, not as if non-alumni of popular schools have no alma mater to turn to

there is no way to satisfy everyone. even if NYPS were to increase enrollment to 1,000 it will still be oversubscribed

Agree ... Anyway if all schools are perceived to be equally good, then this discussion is probably moot. It's because some are deemed better than others, that's why even within HDB heartland, it's interesting how you see 2 schools located side by side yet everyone is flocking to be ballotted in one while the other is not even filled up. Like that then how? Like you suggested, we need prioritize by floors liao. There's really no end to pleasing everyone.

but, but, some schools are more equally good

          Agree but disagree. šŸ˜„

Alumni priority is in 2A. This priviledge is capable of allowing someone staying >10km to register into their alma mater and this phase is capable of taking up all the places in the school.

For those that would like to exercise the distance, they either could not or had to count their luck on the ping pong ball.

It is not really a choice to people in 'distance' and the current system does not go by one's circumstances, it goes by alumni choose first, non alumni stay very near please wait and pray hard.

My old school has closed down and combined with another school and it is located in Queenstown. But I live in West Coast and my <1KM happens to be a brand school. I didnt even know until I started reading Kiasuparents. My first intention is just to go to a nearby school but nearby school is a brand popular school. I have submitted my PV, rejected. I have nothing for me except distance which will only put me in Phase 2C. Historical data had showed chances of me getting my kid into that nearby top school is almost impossible. Do i then exercise my old school advantage and put my kid thru the daily traffic? So sometimes it is really about distance and not so lucky(depend on how you view it) the nearby school turns out to be a branded school... šŸ˜ž Of coz i can still try my \"luck\" at other nearby school but also need balloting!! Same situation again!! And so if i so so so unlucky to fall into Phase 2SC, where do i go? Based on this year's results (so far), i can only go for bukit timah, queenstown, bt panjang?... šŸ˜ž

ya but these people can exercise alumni priority to their own alma mater instead of other people's alma mater ...... they have a choice to be earlier than Phase 2B

it is obvious that alumni will not take up all places if they believe in their own alma mater......but fact is every one wants to get into the old boys' club. too bad some will be unable to get in. just need to get real and move on and live better

the question is : why must everyone only eying on those popular schools ? they have a choice to have alumni priority to their own alma mater. Why not they exercise their birth right ?

what is fair to one is not fair to another

whose yard stick of fairness to use ? nobody will agree to the same yard stick. not in a long time to come

Is this still a problem if this 'problem' is only restricted to the 'branded' schools. Or is this problem prevalent throughout all the primary schools in Singapore?

Again I ask this question: What is the percentage of such cases of a student being denied a school 1km from the home and a student having to travel from one end of Singapore to another just to attend school? Is this scenario happening across majority of Singapore primary schools? Anyone knows what is the percentage of such cases nationally?

If it's only a small minority and applying only to certain schools, is it a national problem? Or just the wants and demands of parents trying to push their way into 'branded' schools?

alma mater having being combined will still give you alumni priority at the new name school, if you want

Think of this whole exercise as a positive active discussion of our foundamental national educationl policy and its P1 registration system and how can our discussion and suggestions improve it.

Think not this being an exercise for those wanting a place in NYPS and could not get because is non-alumni.
