one thing i'm quite sure is that if all children were posted to the schools nearest to their homes and stay there for 6 years (no gifted streaming or whatsoever), we will see an evenly spread of schools producing top students and not always the top schools that usually shine.....

But human nature is such that even with this idealistic scenario, people will still flock to the ones producing more top students or higher avg scores .... somehow they will know or figure out ... unless we start drawing boundaries like the GE ... people staying around this area go to School A ... that area School B, but that would be terrible. Again, people with the means and who are mobile are the perhaps the ones who can move - this may benefit the rich and drive prices of properties up.

i would rather accept this fact as the rich want or prefer to stay with the rich and not bcos of the school....

What is the percentage of children who are deprived of going to a school within 1km of their home and what is the percentage of children travelling frm 1 end of Singapore to another just to go to school? This applies to ALL the primary schools in Singapore.


Anyone knows? If they are a small minority, are we blowing things out of proportion? And then coming back again to personal interest and 'branded' schools?

Convenience is a universal \"want\".

Anyway, the concept of alumni priority is just so wrong in itself.

Only a small number makes significant contribution to the school, and ALL benefited from the school, and yet, All are able to pass the benefit to their offspring. Something is very wrong somewhere.

No matter how big or small the numbers, if it is wrong in principle, it should be reviewed and corrected.

Assuming all the school are perceived to be equally good, I still feel distance priority is the way to go.

And, unconditional priority for alumni in itself is just seems wrong in concept.

It should be reviewed, even if all school are equally popular.

Only Phase 1 priority is most justified.

Not to mention that in Phase 1, quite a number of those are siblings of those who got in at Phase 2A to begin with, so there is actually a greater impact of alumni priority than one sees superficially.

ok NYPS is just an example. You have RGPS, ACS, MGS, CHS, SCGS, HPPS, TN, AT, MBS, SHPS, Rosyth, St Hilda, St Nik......

If it is not within 2km from my place, I don't even want to take a second look..

ok.. all these schools are nowhere near my place.. so, I don't care if there are alumni hogging majority of the places (assuming I am still looking for a primary school).

But I pity those who stay next to them and didn't get a place.

It isn't their fault for the nearby school to be so popular.. why deprive them of the convenience of a nearby school (bcoz most of the places taken by alumni who stay far away)?

I can imagine if these so called branded and popular schools changed the location to Punggol, Pulau Ubin, or any inconvenience location, everyone may also try to flock there and upset the P1 registration system.

I support this!!

Put the branded school in Pulau Ubin.... Let those who wants it so badly go there..

There will be less unhappiness from residents who stay near popular schools and cannot get a place.

Those who are willing to travel and can afford it, will also face less competition..

Win win..

Technically speaking, RCs, NCs, CCC, CCMC and CDC are politically neutral. They serve the community. Just like pple with relationship with clans, churches, pple who PV, they support the respective organisations. In return, they are eligible for P2B.

yes, i totally agree with u that's why i say the best way is all based on distance for P1 reg...
