      Hi,

Can someone help me with the following S&T question?

My DD’s teacher says only 1st one is acceptable, but I thought both are acceptable.

      1. Much as she would love to join her friends for a movie, Karen cannot finish her homework in time.
      2. Much as Karen would love to join her friends for a movie, she cannot finish her homework in time.

      TIA.

                    Hi Michaelia0816,

                    Let me try:

                    1) I was absent from school yesterday, so I did not meet the new principal.
If I had been present in school yesterday, I would have met the new principal.

                    2) You must not tell the secret. Many want to know the secret.
No matter how many want to know the secret, you must not tell it.

                    3) All the teachers were surprised when Joan Chang arrived early for school.
Joan Chang's early arrival in school surprised all the teachers.

                      fightingmom,

Tks for your help. DD's answer is same as yours. But her friend's answer was :

Much to his embarrassment, Steven had forgotten the lyrics while singing in the contest.
She said embarrassed (past tense) so must change forgot to had forgotten. Is it correct??

The sight of Samad's neighbour's house on fire stunned him.
                      Correct or not?

                      Thanks

Yes, Option 1 is the correct answer. The first part of the sentence is the subordinate clause, so it should use the pronoun. The subordinate clause cannot stand alone. The second part of the sentence is the main clause, so it should use the name. The main clause is able to stand alone.

                        Hope this makes sense.
