All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools

My daughter is studying Primary one. We were so unlucky that we were not able to successful in ballotting and has to put her in the school which is within 2km from our home. Then we applied for waiting list in the school just opposite to our home where we were unsuccessful in ballotting. Is there any chances that If i do PV now, that i will be able to secure a place for her in that school or any other way i can transfer her in that school… please advice…

u cannot join pv of the sch your girl is not currently in as your girl already going to start P1 next year (or already in P1 this year?).
some schs give their vacancies to people on the waitlist according to queue number, some schs look at academic/other achievement when they allocate vacancies, some schs look at reasons cited for transfer (proximity etc).
u can still keep in close contact (via phone/email reminder every term etc) to let the sch know you are still keen, hoping that you are the first few lucky ones to be offered the seat.
and u can also focus on your kid's journey at the current school, helping her excel in, settle in her school as any achievement (be it level of self confidence, academic pursuit, skills acquisition) will not only help when sch pick waitlist applicants based on achievement, it will also help your daughter's growth as a whole.

2014 - dd will be in p1. My bto flat not ready but i know which school i want dd to go. But distance n transport lead me to enrol her in my alma mater school - phase 2…

2015 - bto flat MUST be ready n want her to get into that school i want which is near my future hkme. Not sap not hot popular school. How to get this as a confirmed school of choice since the moe steps website said they will allocate?

Can i meet up with potential school principal or vp to express interest? If so, when sud that be? I have these planning lay out… sud i even tell the p1 school i wanna trans out? If yes, when will be good idea? And will it affect how the school treat my dd knowing she’ll be there for i.e 8-9mths (minus school holds and whatnot)…

And any parents care to share how kids take the transfer to be… i.e transition period and esp after kinddy move primary then move another primary school… sigh…

50% of my DD class are transfred students. so there are 2 groups of different ability students in a class. One ~ HA students score band 1 results ( that was the requirement for intake ,90% and above) Another One~ low ability students score range 20% -60% ++


Teacher cannot teach fast/ more due to the wide gaps between the 2 groups.

1st group will find bored in class,things too easy, little HW. My DD ask for home school ,feel learn more at home, waste time in school. many times ask to stay at home. DD used to be aggressive , fast learning momentum in p1p2. Now everything take it slow and easy , which i worried. I feel that 1st group of parents don't involve/ bother much in sch, but send their DDs to tuition classes even they are good. There is competition among the transfered students, fighting a place to HA class.

2nd group of students / parents complaint too much HW, children cannot complete Hw in times. Sometimes never do HW, sometimes never learn Spellings or TingXie, teacher got to postpone the test. That made 1st group of parents upset, because it delay the progress. Feel that 2nd group of parents very pampered their children.

So I had give up ! Told my DD, don't depend on school, lets work hard ourselves.

You girl is in P3 right? In my dd school, transfer students are usually placed in a MA class for the first year they transfer in. After that, it depends on the results they achieved in that year. Eg. a transfer student will be placed in MA class in P3, but may move to the HA class in P4 if the child's results in P3 is excellent.

Please consider the adjustment your dd has to go through by staying in one school for 8-9 months and then transfter out again. Whether you can get the transfer is a different issue altogether. Your dd will have made friends and get used to the school environment. Since you already know which permanent school to go to, might as well apply that school straight away and bear with the distance for 8-9 months.

Can i know what are the reasons you will write in the Reasons for Transfer and the skills your child had?
As my DD1's school do not have any result slip in SA1 (no exam but got tests), how to produce her result to the school?
Heard that her school only give report cards in P1/2.

Honesty is always best, so just write why you want your child to be transferred to that particular school. Transfers give the schools some "power", in the sense that they make the decision on which children to accept. So most principals would want children who have the skills that are in line with the school’s niche areas, and so they ask questions like what skills the child has. The school also wouldn’t want children who are "school hoppers" so they ask for reason for transfer to try to determine if the transfer is for a genuine reason (like closer to home, for example, or current school’s niche area doesn’t match your child’s abilities).
As for results, again be honest and just let the school know that you can’t produce any results slip. You could offer to give them copies of some of her test results, or perhaps the school may have its own admissions test.
Every school has at least one person who is in charge of these things. If you can talk to her/him, you can explain your situation and ask for their advice.

I’m not sure where to ask this question so I choose here since it’s about transferring.

I will be moving to shanghai soon with DD who was born very tail end of 2008. The assignment to Shanghai would be at least 3 years, from 2013 to 2016. When we come back in 2017, DD would be P2.

Question to ask is:
1) Anyone know what is the criteria to go into P2 here directly? Will MOE require my DD to take P1 again? she will be attending international school when in shanghai.

2) I will not be around during the P1 registration process - how do i still reserve a seat in the school that i want?

3) Do you all know the potential challenge of students brought up in international school assimilating back to Singapore education system? What are pitfalls? they need to get used to mugging system practically when they come back…

Any help or advice is highly appreciated!

It’s best to call MOE to ask. Generally,


1) I expect the transfer from Shanghai to Singapore would be the same as for within Singapore. That is, you’ll have to complete the school’s transfer form, be prepared to attach results slips. If the Shanghai school’s curriculum is on par with Singapore’s, then I shouldn’t think there would be a need to repeat P1.

2) Nobody can reserve seats. But I think you can ask someone to do the registration for you. Check MOE’s website on P1 registration. Their FAQs cover this.

3) This depends on how different the international school is from Singapore schools. Ask the international school how their lessons are conducted, then compare this with our schools.

Young children adapt much better to different situations than adults. Since you are returning when your daughter is just seven years old, she shouldn’t have any problems getting used to our school system. The key thing is that she’s sociable and likable, and she’ll get along with anyone regardless of where she is.
