actually it says \"Singapore is now the richest country in the world \"

that does not mean the ppl are rich...

              Errr....per capita GDP leh.

Actually it's quite shocking to me, considering how many low wage earners there are. But then we have a really high concentration of millionaires too....

That is why Singapore has one of the highest Gini coefficient.

Singapore has 400,000 workers with monthly income less than S$1500 (or S$1000?). That is 25-35% of total Singapore citizen workforce.

do you feel you are richer than before ?
I do not think that cleaners in Norway are paid $600 a month. I live in NZ and I had a plumber to fix my blocked sink and we knew him because his wife is the local doctor. Kiwis see any vocation as a valuable contribution to the wellbeing of a society and decent wages are paid so he and his family can afford a car, own a home and take holidays etc.

Singapore is a first world country on the world ranking with the mentality of a third world country. Yes, I am a Singaporean.

similarly there are plenty of low wage earners in those countries right \"behind\" Singapore....they probably have more people sleeping in metro stations and side walk than in Singapore

                  [/quote]d

You don't see Singaporeans sleeping in Metro stations and side walks because they will be arrested with no alternative provided hence why you don't see them sleeping on our Metro Stations. If the same tolerance and compassion is offered to Singaporeans as in the western society , you will be swamped with homeless people. It is much cheaper is sleep in the Metro Station and there will be many takers in Singapore.

If they really have no home and no alternatives, where will they go in order not to be arrested?

Compassion given in western society gave people that choice, so even if they can pay for room and board, they rather spend it on other stuff as they are allowed to sleep in the Metro Station or under some broadwalk.

Compassion can be given and should be given to the truly needy, not to those who are able and yet choose otherwise.

That is the point many people have been driving at and many elites still don't get it.

We have policies that drive up living cost tremendously and yet we have 400,000 Singaporean citizen workers earning less than $1500 (or $1000) per month. And the elites say that it is OK and there is nothing unfair about it. Adding to the problem, we have a system that do not believe in social welfare. Spending in public education and public health care is the lowest in term of percentage of GDP.

Yup.. The govt don't give handouts freely.. but they do give a hand at times when the motivated needy needs it.

e.g. workfare bonus etc.. to encourage pple to be self sufficient and stand on their own. This is better than schemes that breeds or promotes laziness & reliance....
