      Hi Parents,

I am new to this forum and find this site very informative, really appreciate parents for sharing they experiences.

My DD just turn 3 yrs last month so bring her to LC for assess, they put her in foundation class. Then we went for trial, teacher told me they learn 2 letters "F" and "S" sound this week and do some art & craft + colouring and some games which all is fine to me and my DD enjoy it very much. I am thinking to sign her up, on the 2nd thoughts, she is in full day childcare. Aren’t they do the same things when she is there? Is it doubts?

Maybe I should send her to some other classes for brain development? e.g. shichida etc… I am just thinking maybe brain training for 1 yrs then send to LC when she is about 4+ yrs so she can adsorb better and fast. Will that works?

I need some advice, appreciate if anyone can share your thoughts. thanks

        Dear DYJH,

I could share with you what I have gone through.
I sent my son to Lcentral when he was 4.5 years old and now he is in PFS stage (K2 this year).
We started bed-time reading when he was 3yo and thereafter I slowly encouraged him to read out loud daily ( the process wasn’t smooth as he dislike to read on his own).
I tried out many books. Started out with Peter and Jane that was not appealing to him at all. He then read My Magis School Bus phonics series (available in Popular), I can read series- Frog and Toad/ Uncle elephant/etc (available in library), then proceed to chapter book. The first chapter book he read was the 3 books of My father’s dragon , book written by Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, and now reading The Wizard of OZ.
He reads on his own with guidance on NEW WORDS only.
Aside of reading English story book, he recite Chinese classics as well. It takes 45min to 1 hr for both languages. Sometimes when I am busy, I would just turn on the CD and he would recite on his own. Then, I would turn off the CD and ask him to recite.
I have started my 4yo daughter with P&J book 2a now. She is not ready to read on her own. Need to bribe her with sweets to motivate her to read out loud.

          Hi Charmaine_Chong,

Thanks for sharing with me your experience and books... I will take note of the books and try on my DD. Actually, I don't know why type of books is suitable for which age, so I just go popular pre-school section anyhow buy, or just buy those books that I don't have. :nailbite: I think I am lousy mummy.

Prior to LCentral did you send your kids to any classes? e.g. Brain development? Or phonic kinda?

When you kids enter LCentral, which level are they? Foundation or launchPad?

After LCentral, how long soon your elder kid can start reading?

Sorry for asking so many questions cos I don't know whether when is the right time/age to send for enrichment. The old folks keep saying too young to go class. Sigh!

            Dear dyjh,

Don’t be discouraging. You have been trying hard yo find ways helping yr child. That is great. Some parents just don’t bother.

Well. My son knew letter sound when he joint LC I’m foundation. This level focus a lot on letter sound , tracing lines and letters which I find that not worth the money. He took about one month or so to jump into Launchpad. When he was in LC foundation, I had already got him to read I can read series and tested hi
With P&J book 6 and he could read this book very well.

He read My father’s dragon when he turned 5.

He had very good comments his reading assesed by LC teacher.

Whereas my N2 daughter , She could not read now as she refused to do so.
Definitely some enforcement is needed here. Will try to work out something to get her start reading.

            Hope it helps.

              Hi DYJH!
None of us started off as a super mum who knows it all... we all learn thr' sharing, exploring, experiencing, listening to one another.. and KSP is one of the best forums you can find all the answers you want. :rahrah:

As for storybooks, you seldom will go wrong with books from Usborne, Walker, Scholastic.. also authors like Julia Donaldson, Dr Seuss series. I thk MPH/Kinokuniya have better selections than Popular altho' you can find ladybird/robin readers if you want to read her the classic fairy tales. OR you may wish to borrow books from the library before buying any. S'times you have to buy/borrow the wrong books before you know what are the right ones for your kids. 🕺

My kid started enrichment classes at around two yrs old with I can read. He started to show interest in reading at18months and was very keen in anything in prints - brochures, recipes, flyers, newspaper, mags etc. Because of his interest in prints and the fact that I could not/dunno how to teach, I enrolled him in phonics classes (thinking that phonics IS the way to learn reading). It was also then that my child learnt that he could bring any book to me for bed time reading. One book led to another and soon, we were reading 6-8 books at one go. Each about 16-24 pages with simple story line.

Now 4 yrs old, he is readin simple books on his own but depend on me to read books meant for older kids. He is currently into robin books - the series on baby animals and different cities/countries. I m currently reading Harper lee’s to kill a mocking bird as his bedtime reading.

I usually will bring my kid to the book shop and see what type of books engage his attention. At one point, he was very into Dora/Diego books. He would just zoom in and stayed there at the rack where all the Dora/Diego books are located. Recently, he spent a long time at the popular book shop rack reading robin books. These are obvious signs of what captivate his interest and where he is in terms of reading.

You can also bring your child to the book shop and see how the child move around and what catches his/her attention.

Dear iLoveChubby, Agreed that KSP forum is best cos i have a lot of information and ideas here. :lovesite: Oh yes, thanks for giving me the idea of going to library to borrow books and find out what is suitable and my DD liking before I buy... Never tots of it.... 😉

Dear Imami, I remember the last time I bring my DD to popular together with my friend's DD. The 2 gals are running around the book store. Sigh!!... 😓 Maybe I should bring her alone, not with other kids so that she has no playmat and not run around....maybe she will then take books and read.

Hmm.... Perhaps so, dunno. I have never brought my child to the book shop with another kid... He may jus run around too. Speaking from my own experience, I need to induct my child to the bookshop. When I first started bringing him to the bookshop, he didn't \"know how to behave\" - treated the books like rags (throw on the floor, stepped on them), talked loudly as if it was his home, stood by the shelf looking very bird and didnt what to do.

I had to guide him to the shelves, taught him how to handle books/flip the pages etc. Soon, he was on his own searching for suitable books. The public libraries have a wide range of books and nlb is very up to date - they have many new books I am keen to get my hands on. Sometimes prior to getting the whole range of books, I would go library to check it out. Those book reviews not very \"zun\" all the time.

Hello Mummies! Am new to KSP and was really amazed about so much infos I can find and read on here. 🙂

Speaking of library.. I have always been thinking of bringing my #1 (2.5yo) but always kicking off the idea when I started to imagine her running around and screaming at the top of her voice!

Anyone with 2yo kiddos can share what are books that you introduce to them?
Are there Pop-up books available there?

Guess I really have to make my trip down to explore around! Its been ages since I last visit the library. Think the last time was to look for pregnancy relating books.
