ST 23/8 Teacher cuts pupil's hair, mum files police report

It is amazing what we can think of on hindsight. I believe the teacher must have been in a dilemma - What should I do? And I do wonder how much time she had to make that decision - whether she had enough time to make a quick phone call to the parent / consult the higher authorities in the school.


I know of a boy, not in P6, who was not allowed to borrow a pencil which he forgot to bring to the exam hall, and scored badly for that paper. The reason given by the teacher (not his form teacher) was that \"he had to learn his lesson\". The parents did not complain. Now, looking at this case, this (different) teacher had taken another stand - perhaps because it was PSLE, too risky to 'teach him a lesson'. Worse, if this student had been 'disqualified' to take the exam at the last minute by the invigilator because of unacceptable hair length, then who is responsible? The teacher again?

hair for all kids, boys n girls with short hair, must be above eye brows n collar. The sides for the boys shouldnt touch or cover the ears. That is the rule in schools.

I see nothing wrong with the boy's hair..my ds's hair (those at the back near to the top) would stick out just like the boy's after cutting short. His fringe is above eye brows.

There is no rule that say it must be a military hair style or botak or a stylo milo cut. So how is he breaking the rule?

As I said earlier, the boy had a hair cut, the letter issued was just a reminder to all students, there was no complaint from teachers before exam....so how would the parents know the boy's hairstyle is not allowed.

N when I say not allowed.....whose point of view? The school or that teacher?

If the teacher did issue warning to this boy n was ignored, then yes the boy should be punished. Otherwise....i find it hard to forgive the teacher for doing it on the day of exam. Some more threaten to deduct marks..that is totally unacceptable.

Also the price of the hair cut is not an issue here. That is his family preference, lifestyle.

If the boy can quote his live example during the CL PSLE oral, he would have scored high marks :evil: My son's oral was on 1st day...also on 校规...too happy to quote the ones he dislike, and the examiners were holding back their laughter.

My Ds said if the answers could make the invigilators laugh, then can score high marks

There is really different values at work. Personally, I really don't mind if my child's teacher were to do that to him at the last minute because his hair was too long. I would have said \"obi quait\" to him. However, maybe it would have affected his confidence when he stepped into the exam hall. Maybe in the end he didn't do as good as he thought he would and that's where the finger starts to point?


Come to think of it, I'd probably be mad too, but not due to the $60 haircut. But then again, this is talking on hindsight, so , a good reminder for my kids and myself to ensure school rules are respected and followed, whenever it is.
