Any parents with children with special needs might be interested in the upcoming 2012 Music Therapy Symposium. The focus of this symposium is \"Music and the Special Child\". It's a great opportunity to learn more about how your child could possibly benefit from music therapy. Please see the link if you are interested.

There has been a change in the speakers. Please note if you are planning to attend. Thanks.

*NEWSFLASH* AMTS regrets to inform that Ms. Oliver was unable to follow through with original plans due to unforseen circumstances. We are happy Ms. Elizabeth Schwartz from NY has agreed to come on short notice.

Ms. Schwartz is the senior music therapist at Alternative for Children and author of Music, Therapy and Early Childhood: A Developmental Approach. She will join Dr. Katrina McFerran, Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, in training teachers and therapists how to make music accessible to the Special Child!

          Hi friend,

Music therapy is an allied health profession and one of the expressive therapies, consisting of an interpersonal process in which a trained music therapist uses music and all of its facets—physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual—to help clients to improve or maintain their health. Music therapists primarily help clients improve their health across various domains by using music experiences to achieve treatment goals and objectives. It is considered both an art and a science, with a qualitative and quantitative research literature base incorporating areas such as clinical therapy, biomusicology, musical acoustics, music theory, psychoacoustics, embodied music cognition, aesthetics of music, and comparative musicology. Referrals to music therapy services may be made by other health care professionals such as physicians, psychologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Clients can also choose to pursue music therapy services without a referral.
