Our school made the news in Wanbao today (Sat). Bullying is on the rise…

Few weeks back, wanbao reported that one plump P4 boy at Maris was beaten up by a gang of 15 classmates led by the monitor who was a taekwondo expert. The parents said that he has been bullied almost every day by that monitor and he is now afraid of going to school. Then this week (last night’s wanbao), a P1 boy was involved in a scuffle with his classmate and ended up with his lips bleeding. His parents called the police and ambulance to the school but the authorities thought the injury was too minor to warrant their concern.
Both parents say the school does nothing to protect the victims and the bullies are tolerated coz the school wants to give the errant boys a chance. -
So far, some examples of bullying…
1) Shoving and pushing during recess / games / on staircase, thereby causing bad falls
2) Using stationery (eg. mechanical pencil or metal ruler) to scratch or injure others, causing cuts
3) Using finger nails to scratch others deliberately till there’s broken skin
4) Tripping others on purpose
5) Kicking others’ buttocks (narrowly missing the testicles) when they squat down to tie their shoelaces
6) Intentionally destroying other people’s property
7) Scuffles and acts of gangsterism (intimidation, mob attacks)
and many more… -
My son told me the other day there were two boys who fought with stapler bullets. One was so badly cut that his uniform was bloodied.
Last week some boys from the school bus saw my husband waiting for son. Told son that his father is a f**king idiot. My husband dared them to say it in his face.
Last year I posts my son was kicked and pushed. Told the teacher and she said the boy just wanted to play with my son. In the end, my son learnt to punch the bully back when he was kicked again. -
Does this means i need to send my son for classes to learn to defend himself since the scjool seem to be not doing anything? I was hoping for a school with discipline but this seems to be non-existant based on what i am reading.

Happened to chance upon this thread as looking at MSHS for my P4 boy. Was :yikes: to learn and :xedfingers: that the naughty ones don't go to MSHS.
My P4 ds actually has a couple of friends from MS who he got to know from his enrichment lessons. While relating to him the P4 monitor bullying case, he said his friend from one of the enrichment class is a monitor and also has a black belt... I was like  but ds is a giantic boy... usually 1/2 - 1 head taller than his peers so they better think twice before attacking him.
In my ds's son (another school), there is fair share of mischevious boys (it is a mixed school). For some strange reasons, most are in his class  and he is the monitor... In fact just yesterday one of the boys bullied another classmate by punching him during recess. My son and few other friends quickly intervened by stopping the bully. In the end, the bully was sent to FT, level manager and subsequently the principal office.
In fact, the principal just went to his class 2 weeks back. Those naughty ones has to visit her in her office during recess time for a period of time.
Few weeks back, 2 of them \"vandalised\" a P5 class (happened to be my dd's) by drawing on their photos, tables, etc....when they used the class for other lessons after school. The end result... those 2 boys were identified and made to apologise to everyone (individually) in the P5 class. I do hope they learnt their lessons as these 2 boys also helped in stopping the bullying incident that happened yesterday so I hope they are becoming more sensible.
Their FT is rather big on kids' behaviour and as a result, those who always misbehaved will receive numerous calls from him.
Personally, I discouraged ds from playing violent games (those trying to hammer another person till the person die). I was asking him what would he do if someone tried to punch him???? If he punch the guy, he will become at fault too. So probably try to avoid, quickly run and tell the teacher. -

I really hope that these are isolated cases and will be nipped in the bud.So far, some examples of bullying...

I personally think those acts that cause injuries must be dealt with seriously. In the adult world, such acts are called assault.
My boys will be joining MS in 2014 & 2015 - my husband is an alumni and my f-i-l an ex-teacher so I don't have much choice as they really want them to follow in their footsteps. As mixed-race children who take more after the non-Chinese side of the family, I do worry about them being very obvious targets for bullying. Luckily the elder one is very big for his age but that may not help with the older students or for the younger one.
