Yes my girl is in the 12.15pm class, but she's old enough to go herself
..... I hardly ever go to Fort Canning. -
My daughter has just received an offer to go to SOTA in the theatre program. We are wondering where SOTA graduates go to college if they do not choose to pursue their art from after school in an academic setting. Also, what exactly do theatre students do. Any information and inputs would be very appreciated.

Bookworm,
At the end of Year 2, parents will have a sharing session where the school will explain where your child can go, the subject combinations required to get into the unis (NUS, SMU NTU), as well as overseas Unis. This is the time for you to meet the subject heads, to ask questions, to check if your child is doing ok. They do not have to pursue their art form, SOTA is strongly academic and your child will have the opportunity to choose which uni to go to after IB. I found the information provided at the session to be very clear, the paths to Unis laid out for parents to see.
Dancers after Yr 4 have the option to move to La Salle straight into a dance degree program, SOTA will make the recommendations subject to your childโs performance.
Iโm not sure about the other art forms, perhaps other parents with kids in these, can help ? -

Oh ...
we saw a sota girl a few lessons ago maybe yr daughter?
I thought I saw 2 or 3 girls though in the first few lessons not sure. They were in their sota leotard. Did sota send the girls for audition or yr girl applied on her own? Any idea if it's just a one year course for foundation and intermediate and whether those in the foundation class will automatically join the intermediate class?
It sure sounds tiring attending hours of daily dance classes and RAD ballet lessons outside too especially advance grade where lessons are conducted twice a week I believe. -
Hi Pixie28,
The BAC is usually via auditions, but if the student has already gone through the Foundation year, the next year the student may automatically be accepted upon SDT receiving the application.
Is the BAC useful - well, once a month is not enough. BUT my daughter feels it offers her a view into what the professional dancers do, and get tips on how to perform on stage. Mr Janek who teaches them is likable, has vast experience and very generous with sharing dance knowledge. Some of the students will be used for SDT productions at the Esplanade.
SDT also has the Scholars program aimed at dancers who are serious, who are not in SOTA. SOTA does not allow any of it's students to take up this program as it clashes with the school dance hours.
It's here : http://www.singaporedancetheatre.com/education/sdtscholars.php
Frankly, it is tough dancing, any student would have to be passionate and resilient to put up with the difficult schedule. My daughter want to do this now, though I'm not sure how she will feel in a few years time. -
Thanks dance and theatre
I believe itโs a great opportunity to be able to learn from Mr Janek. Yes Iโve read about the scholars program I guess itโs an alternative for those who prefer to attend mainstream schools. SOTA allows students to take up RAD ballet though? I suppose itโs not compulsory to obtain RAD certs but itโll probably be beneficial to do that. Hopefully there wonโt be any clashes in the schedule. -
Any parents remember if the registration for SOTA falls on the same day as secondary schools? This yr pupils report to sec sch for reg on 20 Dec.
