Let me explain why I find ambiguous comments about discriminatory practices by foreigners of \"a certain\" nationality in \"various\" industries to be pernicious:

      (1) It allows whoever has any chip on his/her shoulder to fill in the blanks anyway they want. Someone with ONE unpleasant experience with, say, a Chinese PR will fill in the blank with \"from China\". Another will fill it in with India, Philippines, Malaysia or what have you. Then they fill in whatever industry they happen to work in. So, now we have banking, IT and Raffles Place.

      (2) Before you know it, the impression being conveyed by such posts becomes the IT, banking and numerous unspecified industries in Singapore are being taken over by FTs who discriminate against SCs. These incompetent FTs prefer other incompetent FTs of the same nationality (whatever that is) over more competent SCs. Not only that, this is now spreading all over our statutory boards with entire departments being taken over by \"new citizens\" and PRs.

      (3) Amplify it online and we get anti-foreigner sentiment. Worse, we get people who feel justified in their anti-foreigner sentiment.

      (4) All the while, none of these nebulous allegations can be investigated because they lack specificity. And because they cannot be investigated, individual transgressions cannot be rectified and the individuals taken to task. Which then opens the door to blaming the government - 'they must condone it because they are not doing anything about it'.
      Excellent post! :goodpost:

many of the ex-PRs have since became SC after serving their NS and reservist, and their boys are about the age of being enlisted.

the re-entry permit validity have been revised from 10 years to 5 years/2 years/1 year (2 year/1year REP validity is not listed on the website, they will call the applicant for interview.)
        verykiasu2010:

those who are frequent travellers are not allowed to have REP of more than 5 years

some of them lost their PR because their Singapore employer sent them overseas, and the family in Singapore becomes 半天掉
        verykiasu2010:

Not recent. At least more than 30 years ago. Being allowed to buy HDB but resale only - is later than the NS thing.

Thanks everyone, now I know better.

I want to know too..[/quote]I doubt it's that difficult to renew as long as you are on a similar job which got you the PR in the 1st place.

When a young child cries, there normally is a reason why the child cries. When people express anti-foreigners sentiment, there is also reason why people express such sentiment lah.

It's human nature to look after their self-interest first (I suppose it's just part of our survival instinct). Hence, people naturally resent those who compete with them for jobs, space, for suvival. Hadn't our ruling politicians too resent their competitors, calling them \"trouble makers\" and wanting to \"fix\" them? Yet the very same group of politician is urging others to be more \"open-hearted\"??? When our dear PM labelled the disgruntled citizens as \"one-eyed dragon\" who could only see the flaws with the system, doesn't he too only see the flaws with the people but not the flaws with his own policy?

When a young child cries, the adult should try to find out why the child cry instead of calling the child \"crybaby\" and then tell the child to stop crying because crying is bad behaviour blah blah blah.. Likewise, when people are not so \"open-hearted\", shouldn't govt try to identify the underlying reason instead of calling people \"xenophobic\" and telling them xenophobia is bad behaviour and we should be \"open-hearted\", etc etc?

that is true. situation arises when the HQ sent the PR out of singapore to establish as new operation overseas....higher responsibility ete etc but PR kena non-renewal....it has been a bugbear that Singaporeans don't like to be posted overseas
