Yes, it's dr kelvin. He asked your son alot of questions? He just sat there like 5 mins and done. He didn't really interact with my son for long. Even my mom who was sitting in said 'like nothing like that'. I don't know. But what I was expecting was him to tell me roughly what areas we should work on. I mean, come on, you tell people 'assess', you're givng an impression that it's gonna be somewhat more depth than that!


Yah I heard leapfrog's assessment is more thorough. But it specializes more in speech? I think my son needs help more in social skills that's why I went to wee care cause they seem to have specific programs for that.

I'm really very lost now guys. I don't know what to do.

First the diagnostic test is only in oct. I don't want to wait for it to do something. Whether or not he's on the spectrum, it's clear he needs help. At the same time, he was already seen by the ST & OT in NUH but there seems to be no recommendation for any follow up therapy. Now this wee care is quick to recommend individual therapy without first seeking what are the areas my child needs help in. I don't want to pay the full term fee only to find out maybe another school or therapy suits him better.

Oh, my boy's speech therapy also just concluded a vocabulary test on him last mth as well as test his understanding of speech and instruction. I was there with him and really having cold sweat every time he made a mistake. But thank god, the result was acceptable, he did well enough and scored within average range, not too bad.

If I'm not wrong, my son went through a similar test With the ST in NUH. He also doesn't have problem in language area, in fact I think he scored slightly above the (US) norm. So I assume he doesn't need to work on his receptive language.

like you, i am suspecting my DS to be on the spectrum somewhere even though from now i would say mild. Given he’s only 22 months old, the biggest fear is regression.

i am FTWM, inlaws are taking care of his daily need mainly. but no one in the family can get really close to him. We have a lot of toys at home, everyday he will play from one to another. last one month, he ignored all our calling and showed no interest in us. recently he became better. he’s able to recite songs and stories very well but he doesnt’ call us mama and baba at all. now he doesn’t say anything meaningful but he can imitate a lot of words/sounds.

I brought him to get referral to KＫ to do assessment, but only get the date in Nov. I have been spending one month to get my thoughts sort out and my mood calm. i recently started sending him to montessori classes. will keep monitoring him and find out how to help him on early intervention therapy.

after reading the posts here, i decide to try private intervention centre for assessment and possibly start some programs on the problematic areas. I need advice from mummy here on which centre i shall go to. I need a honest and holistic assessment.

I think we’re both at the same stage. The knowing yet not knowing stage. So I can relate to how you feel now. I’m also suspecting my son is on the spectrum but test is only in oct.

However, the best advice I’ve got is not to wait for the diagnosis. Because whether they are on the spectrum or not, they need help. So what you are doing now is right. Unfortunately, I am equally lost, so I hope other moms would be able to recommend private assessments for you.

Dr Kelvin didn’t ask my boy many questions but asked us parents. And while we were talking, he was observing him and let us know his assessment. Or maybe I offered him alot of information, and he had no chance to talk much about the programmes.

Leapfrog offers ST, OT, Special Ed either individually or in a group. They also offer EIPIC at $2940 per term (think about 2.5 to 3mths each term). So far, I like the way they manage my boy and when I expressed my interest in their EIPIC programme, they didn’t immediately let me sign up or just share with me the programme. The therapists are actually discussing whats best for my boy, assess how long does he need to be on EIPIC and after EIPIC, whats next for him. So I thought they are quite good, not just out to make money from parents.

For Weecare, I must say they have a bunch of very passionate teachers, always so patient with the kids and try their best to engage the kids. Too bad, my boy’s progress became stagnant there, hence I have to find other therapy to push him up the next level. But maybe when my boy is more ready for their social group therapy again, I will go back.

All of us went thru your stage. I suspected my boy to be on the spectrum when he was around 22 mths too. At that time, he can’t even speak a single word. At least your boy can still recite and sing songs.

When u say assessment, what kind of assessment are u looking at? A full psychologist assessment to confirm if he is in the spectrum or an assessment by the therapist to identify the areas he need help? At a tender age of 22 mths, psychologist would normally not recommend a full assessment as they are deemed too young. If you think your boy is mild, then the more they will not assess as the signs though are present but not obvious enough for the psychologist to make a precise diagnosis. He may end up with a PDD -NOS label which is not conclusive.

IF you are looking for therapists to assess him on the areas that he needs help, there are a few centres around:

1. Leap frog
2. Wee care
3. Bridge Learning
4. Kidspace
5. Dynamics
6. Kaleidoscope
7. Kidz OT

The above provide therapies for early intervention in ST, OT, behaviour or EIPIC. Based on my experience, they will not confirm with you if you kid is on the spectrum or not as they are not psychologist but they will identify the areas that your kid is weak in and recommend the necessary therapy. So you can start on these programmes first while waiting for your appointment at kKH in Nov.

He’s not too bad. Can talk at 22 months. Mine started 2.5 yrs old, so that’s about 30 mths.

Have u gotten his hearing checked? Sometimes ear infections can affect hearing and that’s why he started ignoring u while he was not doing that when he was younger. Go have a check on that first. And boys can be really occupied with their toys. Try getting toys that promote interactive play instead.

1) I didn’t tell them I have a friend there. The recept must have heard me talking to my mom about it. But I didn’t intent to let them know.

2) I haven’t told my friend about my son’s condition yet! And they proceed to do so without my consent! Where is the privacy?!! I wanted to tell her in my own time but they over right me!

Is it a coincidence? If not, they have violated your privacy. Go to another centre. If a centre cannot uphold the privacy of their clients, they can't be trusted.
