Is your DS school an elite school? Which tuition centre do you send DS to? Maybe I should send my Ds there? I

It depends if yr child is in the high achiever class. Last yr, I recalled almost half of DD’s class made it for 1st round. After 2nd round, barely 3 made it.

Yes, i think the 2nd round is the tough one. My son is not interested in GEP. He says most of his friends are not interested either, only their parents are. True or not???

It depends as some children is interested while I also encounter parents not interested and did not let the child take the test.

:yikes: Surprised by your DS's comments - one, that he is not interested, (mine doesn't even know what it is) and two, most of his friends aren't either, and three, \"only parents are\"!!!! Where did they get all these ideas from!? They discuss about GEP amongst themselves too? Do the teachers tell them about GEP or did they hear it from parents? Or they feel it sucks cos they have to attend GEP prep classes, taking time away from other things?

At least in my case, i am interested enough to join this GEP forum and my son is only interested in his cartoons and iphone games. imo, most 9 year-old kids (except for some) would not even know what GEP is really about to be interested. however, they are well aware of their parents expectations of them.

I wonder how many parents would have high expectation of the children if they are already sending child for tuition for school work. The school work if already difficult for child to manage, why pin so high hope for child?

Doing well in what they do/study, could be an expectation from a parent.

But I would think that a child being selected into the GEP program should not be an 'expectation' from a parent. It's more about a natural ability, rather than a trained skill and knowledge. So should leave it to the child to show what they are capable of in this case.

Just a thought. If one is illiterate and has never attended any maths course, do u think he/she will b selected for gep program. The answer is obvious, right? I do not agree totally that gep is more about natural ability. I think some knowledges r still required for the selection.

The basics are being thought in school, a high ability child should be able to reason and analyse the questions that need higher order thinking. If we were to look at the higher order thinking questions ourselves, we may be able to do them now compared to the time we were younger. Does it mean that we were trained to answer these questions as we grow? Likely not but somehow our ability to reason increases as we mature. For the gifted child, they must have reached the level of thinking faster than the rest.

In any case, how many of the doctorates out there were from GEP? There aren't many. What is proven academically when young probably give a headstart but it may not be the ultimate outcome.
