FQW:
Actually it depends on both the parents and child. Parents still need to monitor if send to centre if not it is still a waste of money. For parents who has the ability to teach, it is not necessary to send to centres. But do note that it get tougher and tougher as you go higher and your diploma, graduate cert or even PhD might not necessary help.Joyfulhands,
There's also this group of top-performing pupils who don't have any enrichments (like xxx and xxx). Cannot say name, wait they angrii.
In the end of the day, it really depends on the child himself, with or w/o external help. Some kids are born to study bcos they enjoy learning so much.
If the child can study, but still do not know and parents also do not know how to teach or help then will have to outsource. -
FQW:
Bro Mark, no doubts about that at all.Joyfulhands,

Btw, technically xxx = xxx, but I think you're not referring to the same person twice. So I think you mean xxx and yyy, 我的职业病, whaha.. -

But then the gap to P6 is huge. Laying only the very basic foundation in lower primary might not give them sufficient time to bridge this gap. Unless PSLE lower it's standard, which is not likely as many will do very well and the bell curve will not look like a bell curve, it is a difficult problem that the government have to solve.
Don't foresee radical education reform happening anytime soon. The bell curve is likely to stay. Imagine the bar of PSLE standard raising every year and if the starting point remains, the gap no doubt widens. It is therefore crucial for the schools to cover sufficient grounds that enable the lower pri students to grasp the fundamentals. Even then, what is considered fundamental now maybe less than fundamental in future as standards are continually pushed upwards. Take for instance, learning abc in lower pri was the fundamentals during my time, but now, even toddlers are taught 'big' words in kindy/enrichment. -
Jennifer:
To me, enrichment lessons are to make up what my children missed in class or what the teacher could not cover in class due to time constraints or what the teacher chose not to teach in order to cater to the majority pupils' ability.
My ideology is for schools to cover more of what the enrichment centers are doing now, so that the reliance on the latter is reduced.Jennifer:
While \"enrichment centres teach, schools test\" does not apply to all schools, it does happen in some.I do not agree that enrichment centres are to teach, schools are to test.

Joyful hands,
Have you seen the worksheets from BB? There’s no way a sch T gonna cover that kind of depth (or even close) in a class of pupils with varying stds. If he does that, 3/4 of the class will be milling in no man’s land. -
I think at the end of the day, parents have to understand their child n his learning style n std. It helps maintain a healthy relationship w the child n a positive perspective in learning. In any case 6 yrs of studying, only 1 round of exams matter, burn out the child too early or relax the child too long, may result in under performing results. We have to walk closely w the kids on this learning journey
Dh is of the view that ds shld do sports in pri sch n music in sec sch... So that he can cut down on his learning, n build up his body for better health n physical development. He believes in a healthy body, healthy mind. So we do try to maintain a balance at hme

Now that my son is in P6, sitting for his major hurdle in Sep, foundation is crucial at every step of the way, starting from K2. Even at lower primary, teachers are unable to teach thoroughly bcos 30 kids have diff standards.
So, baton is back to us parents. As they move up, class size increases and with Science, it is more impossible to reach out to every student.
We cannot afford to burn out the kids in their learning, but with standards getting tougher, it is impossible not to be hands on. -
