I am trying to persuade my son to apply VS but he is very hesistated .

Reason being he dislike boys school . He commented all boys tend to be more more naughty , more rowdy and more vulgar . Its this true in VS ? Kindly enlighlighted .He wanted to go Anglican high instead as it is a mixed school . Btw , he scored 247 pts .

            Thanks, ycpang!

Have you and your son visited both VS and AHS? That would be a practical thing to do.

Academically, I would choose VS over AHS, and also because of its rich tradition and culture. I suppose this is also the reason why you are persuading your son to apply to VS.

About all boys being 'more naughty, more rowdy and more vulgar', I would say that it is true, but not entirely. (I was from VS and I don't think I was naughty, rowdy and vulgar. ) Of course, in every school, there are bound to be 'black sheep'. In VS, most lower secondary boys were rather well-behaved - quiet when they were supposed to be quiet, respectful, shirts all tucked in, high socks...(and I could go on with all the school rules). In upper secondary, having been promoted to long trousers, some 'fell between the cracks' and became naughty, rowdy and vulgar and this was the group you see outside the DM's office. Other than this handful, majority of the boys were ok. I think at that age, you are expected to be more mature instead of getting into fights and stuff. Boys were always reminded not to do anything that would tarnish the school's reputation. The DM always chided boys by saying, \"This is Victoria School, not Siglap Link (the road name) Secondary School!\" So I guess most of the naughtiness and rowdiness were kept in check.

Regarding being more vulgar, I would say that it is the same in every school. In JC, students from any school (including co-ed and girls' schools  ) can be pretty vulgar too. So I would say being vulgar isn't confined to boys' schools. It depends on one's personal (or may I say moral?) standards.

However, I think it is important to match your son's character to the school. Boys will always be more rowdy and sometimes in their innocent fun, appear naughty. If this is something that your son cannot accept, then AHS is always an option. All the best in your selection.

Thank you very much for the info .

I think I have done my best to persuade him. Think the choice is still his since he is the one attending the school , he must like the school .
Really hope he will ultimately choose VS !

No prob. You can go down to the respective schools to have a feel of it. (I'm sure your son will be more impressed with VS' seven-storey building. Maybe he'll like VS then ) I hope he chooses VS too but either way, all the best for his selection. šŸ˜„

Hi Victorian, a question please, if I may. I saw in the website that Sec3 boys in VS have to take Physics, Chem and Biology. Is there a choice for any combination of 2 science subjects? I saw that they have it in some other schools. My son tends to incline towards the sciences, still, I am not too sure if he can handle all 3..... :?

Yes, there is a choice for a combination of 2 science subjects. There are only two main triple science classes, and a handful of triple science students split among the other classes. However, if I'm not wrong, 2 science subjects only include Physics and Chemistry. Biology is a 'triple science-only' subject. His sec 1/2 results must first be good to be eligible for triple science, then you'll have options.
